Thirsk Museum open for the summer...

Thirsk’s Museum of local things and people has undergone a winter makeover, with some popular displays and new items selected from its archives as it reopened this week.

Visitors to the building on Kirkgate opposite the World of James Herriot find themselves walking into what feels like the front room of a Victorian home before exploring the other rooms.

New features include a display of the work and life of photographer J R Clarke, with some of his original pictures and cameras. His business was prosperous; he was the second person in the town to buy a motor car – the first was the Bell family. The photographs are taken from the Museum’s collection of about 10,000 images, all now carefully catalogued.
