One of the additional pleasures of taking a walk in our glorious countryside is reading the inscriptions on the memorial seats along such routes as the circuit of the Cod Beck Reservoir (above Osmotherly) or along the edge of Sutton Bank.
They range from the commemoration of the favourite vantage points of departed friends or relatives, to memorials for untimely departed members of the armed forces.
Another one has recently been added to the landscape – securely bolted to concrete paving in the Sowerby Flatts play area.
(These things need to be securely tied down, a few months ago a seat on Front Street was ripped out of its substantial fastenings and taken away!)
This latest one remembers a beloved grandfather, Paul Benson, who spent his working life with the old Electricity Board, and thereafter occupied his retirement cheerfully tidying up the supermarket trollies in the Tesco Car Park, and lived in Blue Row, at the top of Sowerby Road............
