On the 2nd Tuesday of March, Andrew Truman, Mayor of Thirsk and Chairman of Thirsk Town Council, came to tell Thirsk & Carlton Miniott WI members about the work of Thirsk Town Council and his role as Mayor.
It gave us a fascinating insight into the work of town councils, and it was especially good to hear about our own town council and councillors, all volunteers, and the work that goes on behind the scenes for our town.
The WI is all about learning and what better than to learn about the place in which we are based.
Thirsk Town Council is responsible for various things to do with the town: the market, the cemetery, the White Mare roundabout, the public toilet, and each Christmas, the tree in the Market Place.
Thirsk Town Council also supports Thirsk in Bloom and is responsible for the seven or so playgrounds around Thirsk.
The playgrounds are usually a requirement of developers’ planning applications, but once built, their upkeep becomes the town council’s responsibility.
