Not a white elephant...

How much paint does it take to repaint a slightly grey White Horse, and who does it?

Thirsk Decorating Centre, who got the contract to supply the paint, tell me that it takes 1,920 litres (422 Gallons).

The job, which needs doing every 10 years or so, was last carried out in 2014. It used to be given to volunteers, until the Forestry Commission who are responsible for the Kilburn Horse, said it was too risky for them.

This time the work goes to Storr Access from the Isle of Skye, a firm who specialize in tricky locations such as marine wind turbines. Their crew of three will abseil down while spraying the brilliant white paint.

Our White Horse is no prehistoric monument, but an imitation created in 1857 by Thomas Taylor, a local businessman who had seen the chalk hill figures of southern England and wanted the same here.

The village schoolmaster John Hodgson marked out the shape, at 314 feet long and 228 feet high, and 31 bold volunteers clambered up to make this landmark.........
