The colours in the woods are changing – reds are coming back, heavy bunches of Rowan berries augur well for winter feeding birds, and the spectacular scarlet spikes of Arum Lily stand out in the tired foliage.

It is also the season of returning cultural events.

As you read this, the North York Moors Chamber Music Festival will be at its half way point, providing a concentrated programme of the best music that the world has to offer.

Pre Covid, the two week season rotated around the churches on the North York Moors, but when it returned, a safer, airier venue was created at Welburn Manor (just off the Scarborough Road, where it enters Kirbymoorside) where a marquee hosts most of the recitals.

It is now so established that the odd tuft of grass pokes up between the floorboards...
