Quakers Open Day...

For years, Thirsk Quaker Meeting House on Kirkgate was used by groups like Mothers and Toddlers, the U3A and yoga classes, who appreciated its peaceful and welcoming atmosphere.

Covid made these community links harder, and more recently the Meeting House closed for renovation.

It reopened just before polling day, although some voters had difficulty finding the entrance opposite the James Herriot Centre. So on Saturday 27th July, the Quakers held an Open Day to celebrate the 400th anniversary of George Fox’s birth, the founder of Quakers.

Much about their beginnings is a mystery, though. The deeds of Thirsk’s Meeting House were the centrepiece of the Open Day display.

Dating back to 1647, they antedate the nickname “Quakers” and Fox’s great vision on Pendle Hill. There were short talks on the legacy of the men who bought the site.
