Recently celebrating her 100th birthday, Eileen Burnley, a resident at Ruby Lodge Care Home in Thirsk, had one special wish — to get back in the swimming pool and, perhaps, even lead an exercise class. As part of the Ruby Lodge’s ‘Make a Wish’ initiative, her dream was brought to life with joy, laughter, and splashing.
The ‘Make a Wish’ initiative at Ruby Lodge, part of the Country Court group, is all about creating meaningful and memorable experiences that reflect each resident’s unique passions and interests.
Whether organizing special outings, marking personal milestones, or arranging heartfelt gestures, the initiative forms a key part of the home’s person-centred approach to care.
Our team takes the time to get to know each resident - their history, hobbies, and hopes - to ensure every wish is as individual as the person behind it.
“Eileen has always lived life with boundless energy and joy,” commented Customer Relations Manager Kirsten Idle. “Her recent ‘Make a Wish’ moment reminded us all that age is just a number. Thanks to the dedication of our Wellbeing Team, the support of Eileen’s family, and the generosity of the team at Thirsk and Sowerby Leisure Centre, Eileens wish to swim again became a reality.”
During her special visit to the local leisure centre, Eileen was treated to a celebratory experience - complete with complimentary pool passes, a birthday sash, a ‘100’ balloon, and even a caterpillar cake.
“I never thought when I was teaching all those children to swim years ago, I’d be here at 100, swimming again,” Eileen said with a smile. “Can we go to the bigger pool next time?”
