Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers ...

13th January, 2024.

The new year began as the old one had ended, with mud, as far as runners were concerned!

The traditional New Year's Day Captain Cook's Fell Race from Great Ayton attracted almost 400 runners, starting and finishing in the village, with a 5 mile more or less out and back course through the woods up to the monument and round it, and it was perhaps as muddy as it has ever been!

Tom Levi continued his good form to finish in 9th place in 33.31, with Freddy Wharton 23rd in 36.03, just ahead of Andrew Price, 27th in 36.11. Joseph Martlow took 39.21, Paul Peacock 40.46, Adrian Elsworth 42.34, Andreas Kruger 43.18, Alan Simpson 43.59, Trudy Morrice 44.34 and Ken Wood 46.10, closely followed by veteran Rob Burn, 159th in 46.12 and 1st M70. Paul Chapman took 46.57, second club lady Rose Kruger 47.08, and Andy Butcher 49.53, other club finishers were Fran Jeffery, Rosie Gatenby, Duncan Fothergill, Kirsty Naylor, Helen Ashworth, Kerri-Lee Wooding, Martyn Coy, Louise Mayfield, Joe Joyce, Ruth Pollard, Kimberli Werner, Trish Radford, Hugh Jenyns, and Christine Burn, with Phillip Craig bringing up the rear.
