The Sound of Thirsk...

If Thirsk has its own distinctive sound, it is Thirsk Royal British Legion Band, often to be heard in the marketplace on a Saturday morning during the summer or at events like the recent Spring Fair. They are big and brassy.

They performed their summer concert at St Oswald’s in Sowerby, and this was special after a three year break enforced by the Covid lockdown restrictions. It was possibly their best concert yet, under Musical Director Stuart Shields, who has a very solid background teaching and playing in brass bands.

They performed a range of pieces and styles, with precision, depth and the sheer oomph which only a brass band can deliver. Particularly impressive was the quality of the trainer band, where aspiring musicians can get their hands and fingers on an instrument supplied by the Band........
