BANKING ON BANKS ...

Each Thursday, I wake up wondering what the burden of this column will be in a weeks time.

This time, the answer came through the post, not to me but to my partner, in the shape of a letter from Barclay's Bank, announcing the closure of the branch in Thirsk, in October.

(This possibility was raised with them after a rumour earlier this year, but strenuously denied!)

I have been a user of on-line banking for years now, and the fact that local branches of my chosen one have been progressively closed is irrelevant.

However, there are many people who mistrust the on-line world, and will miss their local branch................
