Ruby Lodge Residents Celebrate 80 Years of VE Day with a Nostalgic Garden Party...

Ruby Lodge Care Home in Thirsk recently marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a vibrant and heartfelt garden party.

The celebration brought together residents, staff, families, and members of the local community for an afternoon filled with music, dancing, and wartime memories.

“In preparation for the event, our residents worked alongside the staff team to hand-make flags and bunting, transforming the garden into a lovely scene reminiscent of the 1940s,” said Lydia Reynolds, Wellbeing Coordinator.

The garden party featured live music from local musician Paul Moore, who performed wartime classics on his guitar and delighted the crowd with song requests.

There was plenty of singing and dancing as residents and guests embraced the spirit of the occasion.

'Everyone enjoyed freshly baked scones topped with jam, cream, and strawberries, lovingly prepared by our kitchen team.

In the lead-up to the event, residents also decorated biscuits, adding a personal and creative touch to the festivities.’ said Lydia Reynolds, Wellbeing Coordinator.

“Our team went the extra mile to bring the wartime atmosphere to life,” said Home Manager Holly Hunton. “Staff dressed in 1940s-themed outfits, and residents particularly enjoyed seeing our maintenance man, Tim, and volunteer Mick dressed in uniform.

With the support of the care team, many residents chose their special outfits for the party, which made the day feel even more memorable.”

One of the most touching parts of the celebration was a special display of wartime photos, medals, and family documents sent in by residents’ relatives.

The collection included images of two residents—both 100 years old—at the age of 15, taken during the year VE Day was first celebrated.

Guests and residents passed the photos around, guessing who was who and sharing stories. A visitor also brought original newspapers and magazines from the 1940s, sparking conversations and heartfelt memories.
