Thirsk & Carlton Miniott WI...

Last month’s speaker at Thirsk & Carlton Miniott W.I. was Alex Russell from Bishopton Vets, who have recently opened a purpose built veterinary centre in Thirsk.

It was fascinating to hear about Alex’s work, after studying veterinary medicine at Edinburgh University.

Alex worked first as a vet in Lancashire and North Yorkshire; before going to Sri Lanka to help WEcare, a charity set up by another vet, who had moved to the island to help the street dogs of Sri Lanka.

While there, Alex helped treat, vaccinate and neuter many hundreds of street dogs, often working from a mobile “surgery” at the roadside with very little equipment, under very different conditions to those she was used to back home...........
