Sowerby Road one-way scheme unlawful? Council asks ...

30th March, 2024.

Sowerby Parish Council is asking North Yorkshire Council to justify the legality of a one-way scheme which was put in place as a “temporary” measure early in 2023 – and is still there.

Early in 2023 North Yorkshire Highways Department made an order under section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

This allows the making of a temporary traffic order, and had the effect of making a section of Sowerby Road one way. It is normally two-way, and it is the easiest and quickest way of getting from Sowerby into Thirsk.

The original order would have run out later in the year but was extended into 2025.

I doubt whether the order was lawful or question if the Council exceeded their statutory powers, and raised this at the Parish Council’s monthly meeting, which was also attended by North Yorkshire Councillor Dan Sladden.
