Volunteering keeps so many aspects of life in and around Thirsk that it is impossible to list them all.
Many are dedicated to making life affordable or bearable, but few have such a dramatic impact as the saving of a life.
At a presentation at Sowerby Parochial Hall, beside the defibrillator on the outside wall, the prompt action by three local citizens saved the life of retired police officer George Bumby, when he collapsed whilst mowing his lawn.
Two of his neighbours reacted to his wife’s cries for help, Alison Oxtoby started CPR, assisted by Tom Roberts, putting his army paramedic training to good use, and a third neighbour, Christine Andrews ran to the defibrillator on the wall of the Sowerby Parochial Hall.
Their prompt and clear headed action kept George alive until the ambulance service arrived, and took over.
Mr Bumby, after two heart operations is now back to enjoying his retirement, and the three good samaritans have had their prompt action rewarded by certificates from the Royal Humane Society.
Two lessons were highlighted by George, in a speech at the hall – everyone should get familiar with CPR procedures, either on-line, or better still at the free courses that are widely available, and also make note of where their nearest defibrillator is located.
