The peace and calm of Thirsk town centre was briefly disturbed when the rear tyres on a large agricultural cultivator being towed through town exploded violently after apparently overheating.
The first explosion was followed by a fire in the tyre, which was quickly put out by a bystander with a fire extinguisher.
The sound of the explosion, likened to a bomb going off, alarmed people in the street and in shops.
Passers by were told to keep away as it was feared that the second tyre was about to explode also, which it did.
The fire in that tyre was also extinguished.
Emergency services attended and the cultivator was towed away to safety.
