Curlews and Club Spirit at Drovers Road Virtual Race ...

31st May, 2025.

Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers had another packed week and bank holiday weekend with a flurry of events across the country.

Closest to home, from Thursday 22nd to Sunday 25th May, 61 club members took part in the annual Drovers Road virtual race — the eighth in this year’s club championship.

First out of the gates was Ken Evitt at 7am on Thursday, while George Jackson and Liam Nolan brought the weekend to a close.

Designed by Rob Burn, the picturesque route follows the Cleveland Way out past High Paradise Farm, where some runners were serenaded by curlews, before turning back via Sneck Yate and finishing with a sting-in-the-tail bridleway out-and-back. A challenging yet beautiful route.

Some Harriers also managed to fit in another local race on Sunday 25 May at the Northallerton 10k, joining hundreds of runners — including local MP Rishi Sunak — for this community favourite.

Club members Beth Haggath, Luke McNiff, Chris Coates, Andrew and Ruth Pollard, Ashley Dodgson, Will Jagger, Neil Cooper, Clare Rowntree, Paul Atkinson, Laura Till and Tim Walstell all completed the scenic course, many with personal bests.

The hilly first two miles up Scholla Lane tested every runner’s resolve, but sweeping descents and a festive atmosphere pulled everyone home.
