Thirsk and Sowerby have once again paused, as did the rest of the nation, and remembered those who have died in war and conflicts, hopeful that this can be prevented in future.
The eleventh day of the eleventh month fell on a Friday and a sizeable number of people gathered at the town centre to mark this moment.
Bagpipes with their chilling edge set the tone for the event, played by Pipe Major Graham Hall of North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Pipe Band.
Standard bearer Tim Bendelow carried and then lowered the standard in salute to the fallen as the clock showed 11am precisely. The Rector of St Mary’s Derek Simpson read from scripture and led prayers.
Sunday saw the second act of remembrance at Sowerby War Memorial. This, like Friday’s ceremony, was part of the national tribute.........
