An attractive and enduring way to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is to plant a tree as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy of individual trees, copses and woods, and this is what the Meadowfields Garden Club has done.
Last week residents gathered to see the unveiling of a plaque, performed by Rob and Ann Clark, who started the Club there.
The plaque sits next to the tree, which is in a little piece of garden near Chapel Street. The tree is an acer, Crimson King, and promises vibrant colour especially in the autumn......

On a completely different scale, Marc Davies, Gavin Coventry and Alan Simpson took themselves off for a break in the Isle of Man to do the Manx Mountain Marathon, probably one of the toughest runs in the UK.
After a dodgy start, when they found themselves heading for Heysham rather than Liverpool, they arrived at the ferry with seconds to spare, only to find it was running late!
The race is 30 miles long with over 2,500 feet of ascent, the equivalent of running, almost, up and Down Ben Nevis twice.
Competitors start on Ramsey promenade in the north and finish at Port Erin in the south over the highest peaks in the island and almost completely off road. Runners must be self sufficient, able to navigate, and have their cards punched at 12 mountain top check points along the way.
Mist at the start turned to dense fog at 400 m with visibility down to 100m and fast navigation was the key to success......

A THIRSK-BASED hospice care charity is calling on plucky people to pick a Yorkshire Peak challenge and raise funds for local families living with terminal illness and bereavement.
Herriot Hospice Homecare is holding two events in September; the classic Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge and a special one peak Pen-y-Ghent challenge.
Participants will be supported by expert guides from LargeOutdoors, with volunteers and staff from Herriot Hospice Homecare on hand to provide drinks, snacks and encouragement.
Last year, more than 50 people took up the popular three peaks challenge for Herriot Hospice Homecare conquering Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-Ghent, and raising more than £30,000......

Pupils from Queen Mary’s School, near Topcliffe, were inspired by speakers from a variety of industries at the Futures Forum.
The event provided pupils with valuable insight to a range of careers from the creative industries to veterinary science.
Speakers included former Queen Mary’s pupils, Jo Farr, Art Department Co-ordinator at Pinewood Studios and equine vet Alice Barker who works in a rural Northumbrian practice alongside freelance journalist Amy Wilson, who writes for The Times......

Hurrah! The weather over the Easter break was superb (and Finkle Street had reopened).
The roads were busy, as was the town, although travellers by rail were less fortunate, owing to a strike and the almost inevitable engineering works that take place at a time when season ticket holders won't mind very much if there aren’t any trains.
Churches Together in Thirsk marked the religious festival with the Walk of Witness and a good number of people turned out to follow the band and the cross as it made its way from St Mary's to the town centre......

On a different scale completely, enthusiastic fell runners, Marc Davies, Gavid Coventry and Alan Simpson had an away weekend to compete in the Manx Marathon over 50k (31 miles) with 2,600 metres (8,530 ft) of ascent.
Out of 167 finishers, Marc came 81st in 7.40.22, Gavin 120th in 8.27.09 and Alan 131st in 8.42.50. They well deserved their short break afterwards......

In light of the humanitarian crisis in the Ukraine, residents and the team at Sowerby House Care Home, part of the We Care Group, had a ‘clear-out’ of their wardrobes to donate clothing to support refugees. Their donations have recently been delivered to a local drop off in Thirsk.
However, one resident, Elizabeth Manfield, was particularly touched by the plight of the Ukrainian people and, at the age of 92 years young, decided to get her knitting needles and wool out to knit ‘Easter Chicks’ to raise much needed funds for those affected by the conflict......

Meanwhile, the previous day, Katie Wadsworth was completing her 100th park run, at Fountains Abbey.
Katie is a regular and dedicated parkrunner, which you need to be to achieve 100, and lots of early Saturday mornings! Others at Fountains Abbey were Anna Whitham, Mike Cropper, Adrian Saunders, Bronwyn Mayo, James Harrison, Paul Adams and Ian Codling......

It was time for my lunch, but another creature had the same idea.
As I walked into the kitchen, a great screeching and alarmed chattering arose from the bird population in the garden. Looking quickly out of the window I witnessed an explosion of small, soft, white feathers rising into the air from a place under the bird feeders, only a few feet from the kitchen door.
Those little white feathers told me what was happening: a sparrowhawk, fast and elegant, the fighter jet of the bird world, had just swooped in and attacked an unsuspecting bird. Hence the alarm of all the others.
I watched as the predator struggled to subdue its prey, and realized that the victim was one of the fat, waddling pigeons who scavenge for fallen seeds from the bird feeders. That was a surprise, because the pigeon must have been as big as the sparrowhawk......

It was a beautiful day for the first track meeting of the season for Allerton Juniors at the Kieran Maxwell Memorial Track and Field Open at Middlesbrough Sports Village on Sunday 10th April.
Despite having some athletes missing due to illness, there were plenty of great performances. Most notable were PBs from Charlie Morton in the U17M Long Jump (4.98 metres), Lucy Boot in the U15G 75m Hurdles (14.02 secs) and Aaron Kurian in the U15B 100m......

The last game of the season saw us travel up to Darlington on a stunning spring morning – the perfect way to see the season out!
From kick off Thirsk were definitely in the mood to finish with some style and opened the scoresheet with a really well-worked goal, and they continued in a similar vein as the half went on.
We were treated to threaded passes and great interplay, overlapping defenders and using the width and pace when they needed......

Last Friday Thirsk Community Primary School held a Non uniform day where children and staff were encouraged to come to school wearing blue and yellow and bring in a donation!
Much appreciation to everyone who donated money and/or much needed items for families suffering as part of the ongoing Ukraine crisis. We had an outstanding response......

How many of you would think of running from Thirsk to, say, Bridlington, a distance of about 55 miles?
Not many, I would guess, except if you were an ultra runner, but ultra runners wouldn't think of running along roads.
No, they like off road, up hill and down dale in the lovely countryside.
The Hardmoors 55, one of an ongoing series of races, started at Guisborough, with check points along the way, at Kildale Village Hall, Clay Bank, Osmotherly Village Hall, Sneck Yate, the White Horse, and finishing up in Helmsley, a total of about 55 miles......

Last Friday, we were proud to represent our School at the high school playing netball. Before we left, we felt excited yet had our hopes up for winning.
When we arrived, we saw many people from the high school that used to come to our school;It was nice to see some old friends.
When the games began, our excitement rose as we won our first two games 6-0 and 8-0. However, the difficulties arose during our third game as the other team had some good strategies: we had to up our game......

A bright, cold Sunday in March saw the first of three matches at Weetwood, Leeds for Thirsk Hockey Clubs Under 12s in the Yorkshire North East Regional Finals. It was a big day for all eight teams participating as winners not only went home as Yorkshire North East of England champions but also with the chance of being in the National finals held in early May.
The ten strong team were full of energy, enthusiasm and determination which showed in all of their three group games with a 10-0 win against York City.
Shortly followed with wins against North Sheilds (7-0) and Leeds (4-0)......

I never cease to be amazed at the ingenuity and skill of the Yarnbombers.
They have produced hanging baskets for individual retailers, and these now adorn their shopfronts. It is worth wandering around spotting them. I mention a few: I loved the sausages hanging from the Johnsons basket, and the pink shrimps on the basket for the Thai bistro.
The newly opened Fish Dock has a big blue fish on their basket. Ewe and Yarn display a basket in the form of a sheep......

Pupils at Queen Mary’s School, Topcliffe, celebrated several successful category wins at the Harrogate Competitive Festival for Music, Speech and Drama on Saturday 19 March.
First prize with Distinction was awarded to the Queen Mary’s Senior Choir in the Year 11 and under Choir Class, while the Year 3 - 4 Choir and Pre-Prep Choir won second prize, the former also with Distinction......
