Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers...

27th August, 2021.

Wow! How good it felt to be back for the runners at the start line of the Sessay Swift 6k last week after getting on for 18 months with no races! This sell-out race, which has grown from strength to strength after it started in 2012, is very popular with local running clubs and non-club members alike, and Sessay villagers again turned out in support. Rob Scott of Richmond and Zetland was the winner, in a time of 18.47, just a couple of seconds quicker than when he last won the race, in 2017 ( which at that time was a record, and which has since been broken.) Chris Oddy of Harrogate Harriers was 2nd in 19.04 and Carl Jones of Richmond and Zetland 3rd in 19.38. The first lady was Samantha Davies of Easingwold, 40th overall, in 23.28, with Angela Whatmuff of Harrogate Harriers 2nd, and 42nd overall in 23.44 and Thirsk and Sowerby member Chloe Rome 3rd and 50th overall in 24.13...... Tourist Birthday...

27th August, 2021.

Thirsk Tourist Information Office has celebrated ten years in its distinctive building in the town centre. The balloons and speeches were a tad late as the anniversary was actually in April of this year, but the lockdown got in the way. Jim Wight and Rosie Page, who were at the opening in April 2011, came back, joined by Ian Ashton from the World of James Herriot and Councillor Mark Robson from Hambleton District Council, who had a very important announcement to make. Tourism is a major part of our economy. We don’t build cars round here. We don’t mine coal any more. Our valleys are filled with trees and sheep, not silicon. We need to do everything we can to welcome holiday-makers, and help them enjoy their time here, because they will be spending their hard-earned money locally and hopefully going home happy, resolved to come again, having told their friends how good it was. We have beautiful countryside, fun seaside locations, quiet roads, fine old churches and other buildings, interesting shops wedged in between the national names, museums and art galleries, local produce, good food in restaurants and pubs (and real ale), and let’s not forget the friendly folk. I’m glad I live here...... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Stolen...

19th August, 2021.

The Yarnbombers’ current glorious exhibition in the town centre features animals from endangered species. One danger which was not expected was theft. A large orangutan has been stolen from its bollard. There is the empty bollard. Someone has decided that this creation, the loving and hard work of a Yarnbomber, is so wonderful that rather than everyone being able to admire it, they want it just for themselves...... The beauty of Park Runs is that you can just turn up and do one wherever you are in the country, or even many parts of the world, provided you have registered, of course. New Priest at Sowerby...

6th August, 2021.

St Oswald’s, Sowerby has a new priest-in-charge. Rev David Biggs was licenced and installed at a special service led by the Bishop of Whitby, Paul Ferguson. David and wife Emma have made the short trip – from Thirsk, where David was curate at St Mary’s. He will now have the cure – meaning care – of souls in the parishes of Sowerby, Sessay, Thirkleby, Kilburn and Bagby, quite a task. The Vicarage in Sowerby had stood empty since September 2019 when Rev Nickie Carnall moved on to Mansfield Woodhouse in the midlands. The process of finding a replacement was hampered by the pandemic, which not only closed churches but delayed recruiting. But at last we are there. ......
