The best entries and winners of the challenge were promised the prize of a £50 gift voucher. Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers...

18th December, 2020.

This most unusual year is nearly at an end, and almost 60 members and friends entered the final club championship race this weekend, over 4 days, in the form of the virtual cross country in Kilburn Woods. When Rob Burn organises these races he likes to include a few hills and plenty of mud, and there was some of both this weekend - a 3 lap course with the outward half on solid stony tracks and then a short uphill on to a muddy return! Newish member, Andrew Price, continues to demonstrate his form, and he was quickest over the 3+ mile course in 28.02, with Stephan Tomaszewski 2nd in 29.15 and Matt Jones 3rd in 29.20. Ken Wood put in one of his appearances and took 31.34 in 4th place, just pipping Alan Simpson, 5th in 31.35. Rob Burn, in his element here, came 6th, not far behind, in 31.40, with Gary Bastow 7th in 31.54, Paul Peacock 8th in 32.52, Marc Davies, also in his element, 9th in 34.18 and Andy Butcher 9th in 35.44.... The School...

18th December, 2020.

When the history of Sowerby’s new primary school Keeble Gateway is written, it will record a complex, some might say a bumpy, start-up. With delays in planning holding up the start of building work the School opened for its first small classes in temporary but very well equipped buildings and those first children were able to watch work on the permanent building. I asked the Headteacher Nikkie Beniams how it had felt during their “rollercoaster” year. “We opened in September 2019 in temporary premises serving Nursery and Reception children. In 2020 we moved to our brand new building and grew in size as a new group of children joined us and we had our first Year 1 cohort. Having a school built during National Lockdown was certainly challenging! We were lucky that the craning in of the building happened just before the Spring lockdown and so the project remained on track, but there were moments when the opening of the new school building felt under threat.... Feeling low...

11th December, 2020.

One consequence of the rules of the Christmas “bubbles” in time of tiered restrictions is that some people will be cut off from those they know and love. This can be depressing. Events that are a normal part of our highly traditional Christmas will be curtailed or simply not happen. There will be gaps, potentially silence. Things can look bad, and let’s admit that these are dark times if someone has suffered loss, maybe a job or financial security, loss of friends or contact group, or loss of schooling. For some there may be an empty chair at the table. Christmas is great if you feel part of it, not so if you feel left out. There are ways of coping with this. Although we can all point to bad things that have happened, we can also count our blessings. Dawn comes. Be a “glass half full” person. We have learnt new skills and have been surprisingly adaptable. If you can’t be with loved ones, perhaps you can make something or write something for them instead. Phone and video links are a substitute for having someone in the same room, it’s worth the effort and if you aren’t up on the how-to of Zoom, someone will be able to tell you.... Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers...

4th December, 2020.

Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers is an inclusive club, with fast or slow, young or old, all made welcome and encouraged. The oldest member, Ian Codling, got even older this week, becoming an octogenarian! His philosophy is, one foot in front of the other, keep going until the end, for as long as you are able until you are forced to give up for health reasons - or lack of motivation! Ian is never short of that. He actually only took up running 20 years ago, following a sporting lifetime of playing, and then managing, football with Thirsk Falcons. He was forced to give up when it became necessary for him to have a hip replacement. He began, as many boys do, kicking a ball about in the school playground, and when he got to senior school, he eventually got into the school team as well as playing for Falcons. At least weekly football continued throughout university, and he turned out for more than one faculty team! When he came back to the area to teach, he was a regular with Falcons and one memorable occasion was a match against the Northern TV All Stars, a team of stars who obviously loved football, and would appear at charity events.... A test of strength with a significant twist...

4th December, 2020.

Youngsters from Cundall Manor School, based near Ripon and Thirsk, took on the test of strength in a recent PE lesson that saw each child compete for their School House. The unique tug of war event was organised by the school’s ever adventurous Games department and saw pupils as young as 7 compete to earn their School House coveted points. Director of Sport, John Liley, was the man behind the fun event. He said: “With the current health emergency, we can’t engage with sport in the same way we would normally. Events like the tug of war break up the training programmes and inter-house games but also allow for our pupils to try something different, fun and memorable.” He added: “It is not every day that you get to race your school friends in a minibus tug of war. Our pupils had a great time and it was lovely seeing the smiles on their faces as they competed.... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)
