Thirsk Community Primary School Mini Medics...

25th February, 2022.

Thirsk Community Primary School held their first after School Mini Medics club for pupils in year 3 to 6. Kim from Sebeau Health Visiting was their wonderful tutor. The session included learning about the basics of first aid including CPR, contacting the emergency services, DR ABC and how to ensure they keep themselves safe whilst providing first aid. The children also learnt how to put a patient into the recovery position and then went home to practice on their families!! It was a wonderful way to introduce children to first aid with no use of confusing terminologies and showing complete respect for each child’s ability...... Meet the Yarnbombers...

25th February, 2022.

It was such a simple idea: put up a few flags to cheer up Thirsk town centre when the Tour de Yorkshire came through in April 2016. Word got round on Facebook and the idea grew until there were over 300 people, from as far afield as Spain, producing not just flags but all sorts of knitted and crocheted delights. And this is how they put it on display: in the middle of the night! On a Sunday morning whilst most of Thirsk slept I drove into town at 1.30am, half wondering if I had misunderstood what I had been told, but no: as I got out of the car I could hear the merry chatter of folk, many wearing head torches, turning the place into a brilliant display of little works of art. The World of James Herriot was festooned with tiny animals. People on ladders were decorating the bus shelter. The Yorkshire Tea Rooms was open and a buzz of activity providing a constant supply of warm drinks...... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Thirsk Community Primary School Multi faith Enrichment Week...

25th February, 2022.

Every eight weeks Thirsk Community Primary School holds an Enrichment Week, when normal curriculum activities are replaced by special activities to enrich the development of the whole child. We have just celebrated Multi Faith Enrichment Week. Our Year 5 and 6 pupils visited Bradford, where they spent time in a Hindu temple and an Islamic Mosque, we then visited the UK’s largest Asian store. The children thoroughly enjoyed finding out more about these two religions and how they worship...... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers...

25th February, 2022.

An evening with a difference took place on Wednesday evening when the club received its award for Running Club of the Year for Yorkshire and Humberside from Heidi Bielby, English Athletics Club Support Manager for the region. The award was received by Club Chair, Helen Ashworth. Heidi offerd her congratulations to the club and went on to present Innovative Coach of the year to Rob Burn, a well deserved honour for Rob, who goes over and above the line of duty to make training sessions varied and interesting - as well as wanting to make us all into Olympic Athletes! Perhaps the pinnacle was in spending the time of lockdown arranging virtual races, to be done any time over 4 days, and thus allowing the club championship to continue...... Salvation Army group helps tackle loneliness and isolation in new mums...

18th February, 2022.

A mum’s push along group which was set up during the pandemic to help tackle loneliness and isolation is thriving and creating lifelong friendships. Set up by North Yorkshire Pioneer Major Paula Haylett because mums were missing out on connecting with each other due to lockdown restrictions, the group meets every Wednesday for walk at a local track followed by coffee. The group is part of a Salvation Army Fresh Expression in Thirsk, where Paula and her husband Major Ian work within the community and from their home on a new housing estate, adapting to need there rather than from a traditional Salvation Army church building...... Disappointing defeat for Thirsk Falcons...

18th February, 2022.

Last Saturday’s home game for Thirsk Falcons at Sowerby Gateway against Redcar Newmarket was a game of two halves, and almost two teams for the Thirsk side, after a lay-off the previous week for many teams. On a very chilly and blustery pitch, the two teams battled away strongly in the first half, and any score seemed very hard to create successfully. Tom and David James were a joy to watch as they tackled very successfully mid field and passed the ball around their team throughout the first half, and this allowed the rest of the players to step up their game accordingly...... Potty for Potter...

18th February, 2022.

The Harry Potter books have been the must-have reading of a generation of fantasy-loving teenagers and not a few adults. The films which so wonderfully create J K Rowling’s images are regulars on the tv listings. Thirsk Community Library celebrated 25 years since the first in the series of books was published. “We had a great evening with 33 small wizards coming in full costumes to the Hogwarts library, “ Activities Co-ordinator Helen Ashworth told me...... First rural business park benefits from ultrafast speeds...

11th February, 2022.

Businesses at Thirsk Industrial Park will soon be able to access ultrafast broadband speeds via full fibre provider NYnet Ltd. For 14 years NYnet – a wholly owned company of North Yorkshire County Council – has worked solely within the public sector providing gigabit broadband to schools, hospitals, GP surgeries as well as local authorities where speed and reliability are essential. NYnet will now extend its Local Full Fibre network to 12 rural business parks across North Yorkshire, which have historically struggled with poor connections, as part of the £3.6m investment which was awarded to North Yorkshire County Council by the York & North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership as part of its allocation from the government’s Getting Building Fund...... "Save The Cinema" - The Ritz, Thirsk...

11th February, 2022.

The hospitality industry has been severely affected by the COVID pandemic and surely the cinema industry more so than most with many venues closed for long periods of time, Thirsk's volunteer run Ritz Cinema being a case in point. Now cinemas are open and welcoming back customers it somehow seems appropriate to bring a heart-warming cinematic tale to the screen. Save The Cinema is a British film inspired by the extraordinary real-life events in a small Welsh town in the early nineties. In 1993 Carmarthen Town Council made the unwelcome announcement that The Lyric Theatre – the town’s much-loved but financially stricken cinema – would be demolished so a shopping centre could be built in its place. The community pulled together and through increasingly desperate measures try to keep the bulldozers at bay. A letter to Hollywood and a famous film director brings a sudden and unexpected lifeline with a premier Carmarthen will never forget...... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Thirsk Falcons U9s Blues v Doormanstown...

11th February, 2022.

The Blues matched up against Doormanstown for their return fixture today at the Sports Village last weekend looking to do the double over them. Thirsk started the game kicking into the sun looking to fly out the traps. They pressed high and within a couple of minutes of the first whistle, they were able to take the lead. With the confidence of an early goal under their belt, they pressed on looking to play positive football and we’re able to add to their tally and go in at half time with a healthy 3-1 lead...... Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers...

11th February, 2022.

Congratulations to all the runners who completed the NYSD cross country races at Richmond on Sunday, and congratulations to the people who erected the team tent such that it stayed in place in spite of the gale force winds and sleet! (Not all teams' tents did!) What a relief to be able to get out of the weather if needed, and to know your kit is being kept dry. Congratulations and appreciation, also, to the officials, who had to remain in place until the bitter end regardless. Whenever you do a cross country at the Old Racecourse, Richmond, you know it is going to be windy, hard and hilly, but this weekend it excelled itself, and the ladies and over 65 men set off up the hill into the wind...... Thirsk Falcons U14s v Spraire Lads...

4th February, 2022.

Perfect football conditions this morning as U14’s took on Spraire Lads who came in to the game third in the table. Playing on a much bigger pitch today Thirsk started brightly looking to keep the ball on the deck and move the ball around. The game was evenly contested with both teams looking to create the breakthrough opportunity. The 14’s had several chances to take the lead but the final ball just didn’t quite come off for them...... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers...

4th February, 2022.

When it comes to terrain for running, Rob Burn likes nothing better than trails, hills and mud, which he found in abundance at the St Aidan’s Winter Beast, a 6.66 mile race at the RSPB Nature Reserve near Leeds. On a cold, sunny morning, surrounded by plenty of over-wintering birds, Rob was in his element, and a longish stretch of water to wade through near the end was the icing on the cake, as well as cleaning off some of the mud, no doubt! Rob finished 47th out of the 242 entrants, 2nd M60, in 52.34. Tim Waistell came 209th in 1.14.3 and Christine 1.19.31...... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)
