On Thursday, 23rd Janurary 2020, 9 pupils from Topcliffe CofE Academy travelled to York College to participate in the North Yorkshire Girls Under 11's County Football Finals. The team successfully won the two prior stages which were for the Thirsk area and then the Hambleton area in order to compete at County level....

Great team attitude and support for each other.
They won all their games. Strong communication, co-ordination of who was going where and who was coming on and off.
Amelie had some great single sprints, Phoebe really in the thick of, Lucy like a little terrier and never ever gives up. Lwle did some great moves always looking up to see who she can pass to. The back line up of Olivia/Molly and Annie held firm in all games. Lily and Phoebe played so strongly, growing hugely in confidence....

Thirsk and Malton Member of Parliament, Kevin Hollinrake, attended a coffee morning with a difference to help celebrate Village Halls Week last Saturday (25 January).
He was at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall to show his support for the national campaign which celebrates England’s 10,000 village halls.
Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall invited politicians from all tiers of government – national, county, district and parish – to their coffee morning and open day at which they showcased the hall’s many activities, excellent facilities and enthusiastic volunteers....

Twin sisters who live together at Sowerby House care home are celebrating their 90th birthday.
Dorothy and Elizabeth Manfield have been sharing a bedroom at the care home in Sowerby since November 2018 and were joined by fellow residents and family to mark the special occasion.
Dorothy is a former secondary school teacher and Elizabeth is a former grade two laboratory technician at a pharmaceutical company which produced penicillin....

Our Junior Team were entered into the Junior Team Golf - Home Nations Championships late last year. Firstly, they played a regional event; the team played well and managed to secure themselves a place in the Northern Final. Subsequently, the team won this Northern competition, progressing them onto the England Final, which was played at Mannings Heath Golf Club in West Sussex. The team came third in the England Final resulting in an invitation to represent England in the Home Nations Championships next month in The Algarve....

On a cold and frozen pitch last Sunday on the Flatts at Thirsk, Thirsk Town finally managed to play a home game, this time against A.F.C. Nag’s Head from Northallerton, a team which had missed several games last year for various reasons and with a strong reputation, but seemingly unknown status in reality.
Ian Walsh, Town’s manager, was under no illusion and had warned his players how tough this game would be. For the onlookers, it turned out to be an exciting and thrilling match between two closely matched squads, and also a very good showcase for skilled amateur soccer in the district.
From the outset, both teams battled away and gave little quarter, in a well played and largely good natured game that did not require yellow cards, which was down to good refereeing. For the first few minutes, it looked like Thirsk Town might struggle but solid and alert defending from every player in their team kept the Nag’s Head attackers at bay....

Once again North Yorkshire Youth, based at Carlton Lodge Activity Centre in Carlton Miniott, have donated sleeping bags, roll mats and travel pillows to homeless charities across North Yorkshire....

Winners of these prestigious accolades were announced during the British Equestrian Trade Association's annual Gala Dinner, at the National Motorcycle Museum, near Birmingham, on Monday 20 January. A hair dresser from Helperby and who works in Thirsk has set up an online fundraising appeal in a desperate bid to save her mum's life.
In April and 18 months ago my life was turned upside down when both my parents were diagnosed with terminal illnesses within a month of each other. My mum was diagnosed in August 2018 with stage 4 small cell cancer in the lung that spread to the brain and lymph nodes. And my dad was diagnosed with motor neurone disease June 2018.
After 2 years of never ending fighting and pain my dad passed away at a young age of 54 on December 2nd 2019 to motor neurone disease. This has tore my family apart. Such a big part of us has just gone, life will never be the same without him, but he wouldn’t of wanted us to stop fighting for our mum to get the best life she can. My mum always had such a positive attitude in life and she alway passed that on to everyone around her....

In their usual endless driving around to play away fixtures in the Hillsprint Hambleton Football Combination this season so far, Thirsk Town started off the game against Oddfellows Athletic at Northallerton with similar lack of energy as their opponents, who seemed happy to play walking football for several minutes, after a delayed start.
Thirsk Town should have got a goal soon after starting but the other team had failed to tighten up the nets to the posts and the ball went straight through, allowing the referee to disallow it, as he was uncertain. There should have been several Town goals from then on but a certain lethargy or inaccuracy saw the ball go harmlessly past the posts rather than in, for an easy score, which infuriated onlookers in the game.
A further goal was missed when it failed to be saved by the Oddies goalkeeper and went over the unmarked line, but the referee failed to spot this, and onlookers calls to him, he did not notice, and so play continued. However, fifteen minutes in, Josh Duffield gained a reasonable goal for Thirsk Town, and this was just the start for the score line....

I am standing in the churchyard of St Oswald’s, quite near the boundary with Front Street. The rain is dripping off the bare tree branches. In front of me is a large gravestone, old, slightly decayed, canted over a little, and out of line with the rows of much more modern stones. It records the names of Carlisle Bamlett, a farmer, and more to the point the name of his son, Adam Carlisle Bamlett, who was Thirsk’s 19th Century equivalent of Sir James Dyson and one of those men and women who put Thirsk on the map. Inside the church on the north wall is an even more magnificent memorial to Adam Bamlett, executed in mosaic.
Adam Bamlett was a remarkable personality, who created a world-renowned business and was involved in every level of local government. He was born in 1835 at Great Smeaton, into a family of six. This was the beginning of his connection with the land, and prophetically his parents named him after that first gardener in Eden....

The showing of locally filmed The Runaways at Thirsk's volunteer-run cinema on its national theatrical release day proved popular. The Ritz bucks the general UK cinema trend by usually having lower attendances at the weekend than during the week, however we had over 250 people to three screenings last Friday, Saturday and Sunday night.
The biggest attendance was the Saturday when Director Richard Heap held a Q&A session after the film. Volunteer Marc Davies said "It was great to have Rich along once again and he entertained the crowd with details of how the film was made and offered some of the insider information on how various scenes were created. No one would have believed the number of special effects necessary in this, such a gentle film" he continued "I'm sure the special effects where considerably more expensive than the methods used to get the donkeys to perform - a simple ginger biscuit was all that was required to break them into a smile!"....

After a short Christmas break, Thirsk Town, ever the nomads of the second division of the Hillsprint Hambleton Football Combination this season so far, drove to Kirklington’ infamously tiny and uneven pitch in the village.
Now better used to the small scale and uneven quality of the pitch, Thirsk Town started to play as best soccer they could, and were holding their own, despite constant balls being put out of play in the space by the opposition and almost every tackle blocked down the wings similarly, which inhibited the flow.
Unfortunately, one Thirsk Town player had to come off soon after the start, when a Kirklington head struck his mouth and lacerated his face and mouth in a careless aerial tackle, but no card or award was given by the referee against the Town injury, and he awarded the play to Kirklington, oddly....

Another animal about which people have differing views, a vermin of sorts, has begun to eat out in our garden. A few feet from the back door is a bird feeding station hidden within a tangle of branches in a tamerisk tree and equipped with dispensers of seeds and peanuts, and fat blocks and balls, all of which are welcome to the bird life that it attracts. We see many small birds, including long-tailed tits – although I do not claim to have seen any of the waxwings, a rare visitor which had some excited twitchers lining up at Lidl’s car park after Christmas. We seem to have been spared the ravages of starlings, who boss their way in and grab what they can, although the magpies who are rebuilding their nest in a nearby tree do make visits for food.
Now comes a grey squirrel, just one at present, who demonstrates a remarkable dexterity. He seems perfectly at ease hanging upside down from the branches of the tree in order to eat from the dispensers, not a trick I would want to try. He also descends to the ground and scoops up the fallen debris....

The club year, and Championship, got off to a flying start with Captain Cooks Fell Rac, up to the monument and back on New Year's Day, over 5.5 miles with some very tough climbs and descents, leaving the legs throbbing for several days! To celebrate 50 years of fell races, 50 special events have been designated throughout the area and the first of these was the Captain Cooks race, attracting an unusually large field of 449. Tom Levi was first club finisher, 10th in 33.52, Stephan Tomaszewski 72nd in 39.33, Ken Wood 78th in 39.45, Alan Simson 129th in 42.36. Rob Burn wswas next, in his element over a course like this and finishing 148th in 43.39, taking the prize for 1st M65. Esther Harrison came 174th in 44.52, Lorraine Hiles, floating along as usual, 196th, and 1st F55, in 45.57, Jack Fisher, getting his first experience of senior fell racing....

PATIENTS undergoing short medical procedures can now administer their own pain relief thanks to a small handheld inhaler.
The novel pain control method has been introduced at the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton and has completely eliminated the need for anaesthetic or intravenous drugs for patients using it.
Commonly known as a green whistle, the Penthrox inhaler contains a small amount of Methoxyflurane gas which patients self-administer by breathing through the device.
The green whistle, which has also been introduced at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough....

One of our teachers Mrs Holme arranged a fantastic craft event to raise money for the charity MIND. On the morning there were various crafts to undertake including pom pom making, Christmas decorations, fabric pin cushions, angels and garlands. We were lucky to have some of Thirsk Yarnbombers join us to teach us how to crochet and make some lovely woolly decorations.
There were refreshments provided and a raffle with lots of lovely prizes donated by staff of the School....

One again, Thirsk Royal British Legion in Kirkgate, held their ever popular festive Christmas treat, the Senior Party for members of the Club in Thirsk just before Christmas. Stewardess Mandy Stout and Pauline provided a scrumptious buffet, free raffle and two free drinks, courtesy of the Thirsk RBL Committee, as well as a popular Christmas draw. The very Christmas-inspired lounge was well attended, with many members also in suitably festive hats, jumpers and clothes....

A charity volunteer has raised more than half a million pounds for the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) by placing Sooty collection boxes across Yorkshire for nearly 20 years.
Gerry Allen, 70 from Thirsk, became an RNIB Sooty Box Collector after retiring from the police in 2000. Since then, he has built up a huge network of places to host his Sooty collection boxes, collecting donations from around 1,000 pubs and shops covering the length and breadth of Yorkshire.
Gerry said: “When I retired, I registered with my local volunteer bureau to keep myself occupied. I was contacted by RNIB who asked if I could become a Sooty box collector and I said I’d be delighted to do it....

Peter Gibson, former Managing Director of Coles Solicitors, and local resident, was elected to Parliament as the first Conservative MP for Darlington since 1987. Peter had previously stood in the Redcar Constituency in 2017, which the Conservatives also took this December - for the very first time since the seat was created.
Peter was selected as the Conservative Candidate back in December 2018, and was a leading figure of the campaign in the local elections which saw the Conservatives take control of Darlington Borough Council in May 2019. As local businessman Peter has been active in the community over many years. He continues to be a Trustee of Herriot Hospice Homecare....
