I have been so impressed with the quality of work that the children are producing from home, as well as the engagement during our live learning sessions. Even though we haven't been in school and the lessons are slightly different, all the children are on time, at 9 o'clock ready to learn. It took some getting used to; in the first few sessions no one wanted to say anything....

I have attached some of the fabulous work that our pupils have been sending in during lockdown. Our pupils have all been working really hard in these difficult times. Whether within school or remote learning, everyone has been so resilient, trying their best and working hard....

The sign at the top of Blakey Lane said it all: road ahead closed. We had no doubt why. When the streams and rivers that feed into Cod Beck are filled to the brim by rain, Cod Beck itself grows and grows, stretching out onto the flood plains around. And that means that just beyond the ancient Blakey Lane bridge the road where it bends sharply away from the line of the Beck towards the York Road disappears beneath water. Like quite a few others, including my colleague Chris Purser, I wandered down the Lane to see how bad it all was. The bridge stood firm, coping as ever with the force of water flowing under its arch....

A care home in Thirsk, is one of the first homes in North Yorkshire to receive the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccination as Registered Nurses visited to administer the first dose.
The home arranged for each resident to pair up with a staff member whilst having their injections to offer additional support during the vaccination process. Residents and their families have been eagerly awaiting news of when they will be able to receive the vaccine at their home and were thrilled to find out that they were top of the list for the jab. Dr Lindsey Raeburn and Registered Nurses from Lambert Medical Centre....

A £4 million makeover for Thirsk’s leisure centre is set to get underway thanks to council cash.
Work on the 30-year-old Thirsk and Sowerby Leisure Centre begins in February with planned upgrades and extensions bringing it bang up to date.
Once complete the centre will boast a gym three times the size of the current facility – which for the first time will be operational 24/7, a new studio for exercise classes and meetings – as well as a cycling studio.
Outdated plant equipment that forced the centre’s pools to close several times last year will have been replaced with greener, more environmentally sustainable equipment and it will have a new roof to address much needed repairs and condensation issues experienced within the building....

Members continue to run, though on their own and in spite of all the difficulties, and take encouragement from being a part of the club. Rob Burn's weekly newsletters give suggestions for sessions, and social media brings people together. Hugh Jennyns, a re-joined member after a lapse of a few years has found the camaraderie and friendship inspiring, even though we are not at the moment able to meet together as a club, and when we did, it was in the dark. This is a common theme with new members, who all talk of the friendship in the club....

After several weeks of postponed games all round, one of the final games of the Hillsprint Combination Sunday league just before Christmas was a grudge match local derby between Robert Thompson’s re-formed club and Thirsk Town, on the Flatts at Thirsk. Both are in division two at present, with Thompson’s taking the head of the fixture table so far. At their last meeting Thompsons’ trounced Town and expected to do so again in mid winter sunshine on a very soft pitch. To the growing numbers of spectators who came to watch this game it was to be a pleasing match between two equally skilled and determined teams than showed off fierce determination to win and defend....

The snowdrops are a wonder: they poke their tiny shoots up through the old leaves and the snow, a welcome sight, hardy and thriving, a first promise of spring. The first ones are showing in St Oswald’s churchyard and soon there will be quite a display.
Sadly, in common with St Mary’s in Thirsk, the decision has been taken to suspend regular services at St Oswald’s because of the high infection rates in Hambleton. Hopefully, like Pepys we shall soon be able to say that the worst is over, but a year into this crisis, we need to persist a little longe....

With yet another lockdown, opportunities for members to get together to run are non-existent (unless they live in the same "bubble"). Socially distanced club sessions had been taking place but are now no longer possible. There is no excuse for slacking as club coach, Rob Burn, issues a suggested training schedule each week. Snow may have been a problem but that is about gone now, leaving plenty of mud and slush, no doubt. The Sowerby Gateway track has been more akin to an ice rink during the frosty weather, and running on the snow covered grass was a safer option. Hopefully, now, even that is back to its more normal excellent state....

Last Friday’s snow and sleet certainly brought difficult conditions in the area throughout the weekend, however the snow atop of Sutton Bank made it look more like an Alpine retreat rather than the gliding club. Crisp and powdery snow as opposed to the sludge we normally see made for a very picturesque scene....

Pupils competed in virtual sporting competitions within their class/year bubbles; they participated in Cross Country, Archery, Tri Golf, Orienteering, Speed Bounce and Dance. In total we received over 100 medals....

Despite the cold and windy conditions on Boxing Day 2020, two stalwart teams of young footballers from Thirsk came to the Flatts pitch to play a memorial soccer game in honour of two young local men, Mason Pearson and George Turner, who tragically died in a car crash on the A61 between Busby Stoop and Carlton Miniott in March of 2018. Both teams stood to attention in the centre and clapped the two young men before the game began....
