During lockdown 2020 my little boy Noah and I made Colin the COVID caterpillar. A stone which we found and painted then placed up at Sowerby sports village. We placed a small note alongside the stone and encouraged others to paint and leave a stone to form a body for Colin the caterpillar.
Each day on our daily walk out we would go up to the sports village and see how the caterpillar was forming.
Soon he had well over 200 stones as part of his body. Sadly these were moved and after a little Facebook plee to #findColin he was found by a mum and her little boy on the building site behind the sports village......

The floodlights at Thirsk hockey pitch have been replaced with new climate friendly LED lights.
The hockey pitch which is based at Thirsk School and Sixth Form College, is benefitting from £32,000 council funding which will pay for the purchase and installation of the new lights.
Councillor Mark Robson, Leader of the council and the local councillor for Sowerby and Topcliffe said: “This is a really sound investment, as it is not only providing an improved lighting option but also helping in our ongoing commitment to tackling climate change across Hambleton......

A very cold and frosty morning, -2 degrees, saw 42 Harriers heading for the Dalby Forest for the Park Run, a longish journey with an early start from Thirsk, for the second Club Championship race of the year, an actual one rather than virtual for the first time.
It is unusual for a park run in that it is a one lap course, and conditions were picturesque, cold and clear, no head wind - with a nasty uphill at the end!
Matt Jones was first club finisher, in 3rd place out of 194 in 19.04. Well done. Bronwyn Mayo again came high up the table,10th overall and first lady finisher in 20.15. Superb. Alan Simpson was 14th in 20.46 and Esther Harrison, really getting back into her stride, 17th, and 3rd lady, in 21.07, with Trudy Morrice 18th, 4th lady, in 21.24......

The Blues braved an early start on what many of the attending parents may describe as the coldest day the world has ever known.
The team weren’t given the start they wanted today after they conceded a penalty in the opening minute or two.
Luckily for Thirsk the penalty wasn’t converted and the team were able to compose themselves.
Thirsk were able to carve out a number of terrific opportunities with some smart passing movements and excellent techniques on show but it was Billingham that eventually took the lead despite some fantastic saves from Thirsk’s goalkeeper......

Musician of the Year 2021 was awarded to Leah the Training Band’s 1st baritone player at the annual Christmas Concert last December.
Leah has played baritone since primary school when she shocked her parents by deciding to take baritone lessons, rather than the trumpet ones they had signed her up for at school. She plays in the Orchestra and Brass Group at Queen Mary’s School but found that many people would ask her what her instrument was as they did not know, and she felt the odd one out......

A busy weekend saw 5 Thirsk and Sowerby members among the 1400+ finishers of the popular Brass Monkey Half Marathon at York on a fine morning for running.
With a fast field over a level course, more than 100 runners broke a 1.18 finish time, with Tom Levi among them, 80th in PB 1.16.27.
New member, Jamie Bentley ran a creditable 1.24.22 to come 246th, with Matt Jones doing a PB of 1.26.10 to come 295th, Adrian Elsworth 711th in 1.42.01, also a PB, and Tim Waistell 1269th in 2.10.26......

David Gray’s photograph published 8th January edition of a train at Thirsk station on a snowy day 43 years ago in January 1979 set me thinking about our railway system and where it's going both literally and metaphorically. On 1 August 2019 I myself stood roughly where David stood in order to photograph the first Azuma train as it sped past Thirsk station on the fast line. Sadly I have yet to travel in one.
The railways were a great invention and they opened up many parts of the world in a way that could not be done any other way.
Their origins lie very close to us with the Stockton and Darlington railway which opened in 1825. It was extended to Middlesbrough as a port for the coal traffic and made that town the fastest growing of any in the UK in the 19th Century......

First game of the new year for the U13s and thankfully, it wasn't called off due to the weather!
Thirsk were looking to start January off well but, from kick-off, they looked a bit sluggish and weren't making their usual crisp passes between each other.
Falcons still managed to win the ball back well and create plenty of chances, although converting them was also a bit off the boil.
Some individual efforts saw Thirsk end the first half with a decent score line, but they certainly needed some energy and awareness if they were to improve in the second half......

2022 saw a new start for Thirsk Falcons men’s football team in a home game against Staithes Athletic last Saturday at Sowerby Gateway on a mild and sometimes even sunny pitch.
Last October they drew 2:2 against Staithes Athletic ,and the first half of the game saw no reason why a similar result might not be repeated.
Neither side seemed able to overwhelm the other in a lacklustre start. It was good to see three officials again and a better standard of play seems to create a better atmosphere among players.
There was one minor incident which the referee quickly nipped in the bud and normal soccer soon resumed.
Both teams attacked and defended well and no goals seemed in the early stages. However, the first half did not show great promise for an exciting game, so the half time whistle was a welcome distraction......

For the first game back after Christmas, the U14s treated the spectators to a fantastic showing. The difficulties of 2021 were behind the U14s in that they had a full compliment of players for the first time this season with the exception of one player who pulled up injured in the warm up.
Falcons started well and were immediately looking to cause problems with a ball played through. Falcons' winger pounced on it and immediately converted it setting the tone for the game......

Recently, I attended The Sutton Bank Star Hub, an officially recognized place where anyone can stargaze above the North York Moors, as well as a Dark Sky Discovery Site.
Dark Skies are an incredibly important part of the rural environment here in Thirsk and Malton, offering a significant boost to the rural economy in winter from astro-tourism. Moreover, the impact such experiences can have on children and their education about the universe is crucial, serving as a gateway to a career in science.
The Dark Skies initiative, led locally by North York Moors National Park, works with businesses, councils and households across North Yorkshire to reduce unnecessary light pollution to significantly increase the visibility of planets, stars and galaxies, including the one we inhabit, the Milky Way......

Saturday was a day of celebration at Fountains Abbey when Bronwyn Mayo completed her 250th park run.
What an achievement, and what a lot of early mornings to be there for a 9am start!
Her quest began 11 years ago at the Wimbledon Common event and she's been pretty a regular attender throughout the country ever since.
Alan Simpson was first club finisher out of 382, 26th in 21.02 with Bronwyn next, 30th, and 5th lady, in 21.21. Adrian Elsworth came 35th in 21.24, Esther Harrison 43rd in 22.16, Lorraine Hiles 22.44, Brett Edgeworth 23.49, Mike Cropper 25.46, Kimberli Werner 33.59, Richard Easby 34.01, Paul Adams 34.34 with tail walker, Jemma Cropper bringing up the rear......

In response to your request for photos of Thirsk within the last 50 years, please find attached one of my own railway photos, scanned from a 35mm slide for your consideration for inclusion. I am happy for you to enhance the photo for your needs as no doubt your software will be much more advanced than mine.
It was taken on the very cold mid afternoon of 3rd January 1979. There were very few people about and the member of the station staff seemed very reluctant to trudge across from the warmth of the station buildings opposite to deal with the train. Then, Thirsk always seemed to have a roaring fire in the waiting room on the far side......
