Fit and running...

25th June, 2021.

Another day, another 10,000 steps; or maybe not. Those of us with pedometers, including like me those who have found one on their mobile phone and have been tempted to watch the figures, may know that 10,000 is by no means the right figure for daily exercise. When this little gadget, a sensor that detects if you are walking, or even if you are climbing stairs, was invented, the inventors, in Japan, chose an arbitrary figure as a notional target. They chose 10,000. If I did that many steps every day, not only would I have rather less time for things I need to do, things which are equally healthy, but I would probably end up needing a hip or knee replacement. My pedometer is a reminder, not a sergeant major shouting at me to pick my feet up! It is a servant, not a master. Exercise, either deliberate or implicit in one’s daily activities, is important to keep healthy. They do say: use it or lose it. One person who clearly exceeds 10,000 steps a day is multiple world record holder and endurance athlete Sean Conway who has been running 15 marathons in as many days across 15 national parks. He ran two Yorkshire sections of his challenge in the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors earlier this month.... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

ARSON AT SCOTCH CORNER CHAPEL DESTROYS SCULPTURES...

18th June, 2021.

An arson attack at the Scotch Corner Chapel, built by sculptor John Bunting has destroyed some of his works. They were in an annexe to the chapel, built as a memorial to pupils at Ampleforth College (where Bunting both studied and taught) who died in World War Two. His son, Bernard Bunting drove up from London to assess the damage, commented "Why would anyone carry out such a meaningless and mindless attack. We are thankful that the chapel itself is undamaged, but very sad at the loss of some of his works in wood that were stored in the building.... COUNCIL GRANT HELPS PAVE THE WAY...

18th June, 2021.

A hillside village now has safe access to the village hall thanks to council cash and money from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL). Borrowby near Thirsk secured the cash for the much-needed path to provide a safe walkway across the village car park, which was rough, uneven, and unsuitable for pedestrian access. The new wide pathway will not only benefit those with wheelchairs and push chairs, but over 300 residents from the village and surrounding villages. Hambleton District Council provided £1,875 from its Making a Difference fund with a further £1,665 coming from CIL money.... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Bier...

18th June, 2021.

When I got a message from Thirsk Museum which seemed to invite me for a beer, I thought they were planning to take me out to a pub. It turns out they were calling to tell me about a new exhibit which they have received from Thirsk Town Council. It is a bier, a fine piece of Victoriana which was for decades used to transfer coffins from the horse-drawn hearse to the graveside. It began service in 1877 and was probably built locally. Its spoked wheels look as if they could have been made by one of the many bicycle manufacturers in the late 19th Century. It is a suitably solemn dark brown and was particularly useful if the coffin was unusually heavy. The Museum also has a collection of bereavement cards, the size of business cards, recording in all too many cases the death of a child or adult of no great age.... Local Thirsk band Deadbeat at Dawn are to release their EP ‘Dyscopia’ in the near future featuring ‘Out of Love’ with a locally filmed video featuring various landscapes from the Thirsk area. Deadbeat at Dawn are creating a wild hybrid mash up of energetic punk & dancable ska, and with two vocalists who rap, sing, snarl and shout their way through each song, DEADBEAT AT DAWN are a hard sound to pin down and define. They call it Skapocalyptic - a furious combination of the genres they love, crafting punk, ska, reggae, pop and hip hop into a unique beast. Boundary changes “Totally unworkable”...

11th June, 2021.

The Boundary Commission, an independent body tasked with making English Parliamentary constituencies as equal in terms of numbers of voters as possible, has published its provisional plans to reform the size and shape of constituencies, and MP Kevin Hollinrake is not at all happy. Almost every constituency in the country will be changed under the present proposals to reflect changes in population. Thirsk and Malton, already one of the largest constituencies geographically, stretches from Filey to Thirsk and from the Dales down to Shipton. The new plan would make it even wider, adding on two wards, Bedale and Tanfield, to the west of Thirsk. These are currently part of Richmond constituency. It would also see Easingwold transferred to a new Wetherby and Easingwold constituency. This has the democratic aim of making a vote in Scunthorpe, Truro or Wolverhampton of equal value in a general election. Sheep don’t count.... Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers...

11th June, 2021.

You begin to notice after a while what a lot of couples there are in a running club. Running is one of those activities men and women can do, if not on equal terms, then at the same time. Usually the male partner is quickest, though not always. Out of about 160 members of Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers, 40 people, or almost 25% for those with a mathematical bent, are part of a couple. Perhaps the best known are Rob and Christine Burn, though Rob was running for many years, and probably at his very best, before Christine became less busy with work and was able to take up the sport. If you can't beat 'em join 'em! This applies to many couples where one has started running and the other has decided it may also be for them.... Go-Kart Fever Returns after Hiatus...

Dozens of daredevil pupils from a local school provided some high-octane entertainment as the annual Cundall Go-Kart Race returned following a forced hiatus due to covid-19. The break did not dampen spirits with the homemade Go-Karts providing speed, theatre and some spectacular but safe crashes at Cundall Manor School 28 May. This year saw Noah claim the top spot on the podium following a morning of fun and heart-stoppingly mad-cap racing. The local school, has held the event for well over a decade and this year saw a range of innovative entries from its pupils including a modified rocking horse to several smoke expelling entries.... Public urged to avoid Thirsk footpath over safety fears...

4th June, 2021.

Members of the public are being urged to avoid the footpath connecting St James Green with Marage Road in Thirsk which is in danger of collapsing into the river. North Yorkshire County Council has closed the public right of way after reports of cracks and movement of the pavement. Inspections have revealed that erosion has raised concerns about the retaining wall of the riverbank adjacent to Cod Beck and the safety of the footbridge. Repairs were carried out in 2015 to ensure the well-used footpath could remain open, but this latest development means it is currently unsafe to use.... Thirsk Falcons U12/13’s vs Eaglescliffe...

4th June, 2021.

Thirsk travelled up to Eaglescliffe on a hot and humid morning with a skeleton crew to face Eaglescliffe in an end of season friendly. The game kicked off and the early pressure was Thirsk and eventually the early pressure paid off and we took the lead. Eaglescliffe levelled it up shortly after against the run of play but Thirsk kept their heads and restored their lead. Just before half time Eaglescliffe levelled it up and the teams came in even....
