Thirsk Hard of Hearing club celebrated last week their 30th Birthday. The Chair of the club hosted an afternoon tea in their garden. They were able to reminisce about visits & outings over the years and there was lots of laughter. There was also some sadness in the mix as some of the past members have passed away, leaving some special memories. Some previous members were invited to come along and they were made very welcome. Pat is the current leader of the club and is wanting to take a back seat very soon so we are on the lookout for a new leader, someone who has empathy with people who struggle with their hearing....

Last Saturday Managing Director of the James Herriot Centre in Kirkgate, Thirsk Ian Ashton, and a host of special guests and volunteers celebrated twenty years of the continuing success of the Museum, remembering the veterinary lives of James Herriot and Siegfried Farnon, better known to Thirsk people as Alf Wight and Donald Sinclair, who were Thirsk’s vets for many years. This Georgian building had been their homes for several years and workplace until their deaths in 1995, and continues to hold affection around the world as visitors flock daily to see the exhibitions of life so charmingly and vividly remembered in the numerous books, films and BBC television series of “All Creatures Great and Small” as portrayed by Alf Wight posing as “James Herriot”....

Zomblogalypse - Final filming at Thirsk's Ritz Cinema

In June 2019, the cast and crew of comedy-horror movie Zomblogalypse invaded The Ritz cinema in Thirsk to film the last few scenes from their labour of love, a feature version of the cult web series of the same name. The plot of the series and the movie is basically three very silly survivors of a zombie apocalypse in York decide to make their own movie... with amusing results. And deaths. Co-creators/co-writers/co-directors/co-humans Hannah Bungard, Tony Hipwell and Miles Watts, who also play their namesake as the three main characters of the film, are jubilant about finally completing the Zomblog movie, an idea they’d been gestating since the series ended in 2011....

Thirsk RBL Training Band & Ripon City Training Band

Last Saturday Thirsk RBL Training Band and Ripon City Training Band joined together to perform a joint concert at the annual Sawley Summer Fayre. The bands had been practising the same music in preparation for the event. The joint bands were conducted by Debbie Price and Richard Heath, Musical Directors of Thirsk and Ripon Training Bands respectively. Fayre goers were amazed by the wonderful muscial talent....

THIRSK HOCKEY CLUB

Thirsk Hockey Club has two teams representing them in the annual U11 summer league. On Sunday they travelled to Wakefield for the first round of fixtures, with a mix of boys and girls to compete against teams from York, Rotherham, Ben Rhydding, Wakefield, Sheffield and Huddersfield. Given that neither team have played together, both gelled well. The A team enjoyed three wins (against Sheffield, York B and Leeds Adel), one draw (Ben Rhydding A) and two defeats (York A and Rotherham), scoring a total of 8 goals and conceding 5....

Emeralds 1st XI .v. Didsbury Women’s 1st XI. Vitality Women’s Club T20 Cup Regional Final at Sessay, Sunday 3rd June. Unexpected heavy overnight rain thrust serious doubt onto whether this match could be played. A significant amount of water had seeped under the covers at the pavilion end of the pitch, thus requiring an extensive amount of intervention from groundsman Brian Powell to maintain any chance of the match being played. The variable nature of the weather forecast created great anxieties all round. Everyone was well aware that somehow a result had to be achieved with a National Finals place at stake and no scope to play the match on an alternative date....

New Hockey Pitch and Sports Pavilion

Work is now well underway on Queen Mary’s School’s new floodlit synthetic pitch certified for Hockey, Netball and Tennis and Sports Pavilion. The new facility in the grounds of Queen Mary’s School, Topcliffe, includes a full sized synthetic pitch constructed by Cleveland Land Services of Guisborough and overseen by Notts Sports, official partners to England Hockey and the UK’s leading specialist in the design and supply of synthetic surfacing systems. Alongside the pitch a two-storey Sports Pavilion will provide changing rooms for up to four teams, a central multi-use space and a viewing platform. The pavilion is being constructed by Moduloft at their Catterick Bridge site....

Ian and Marian Codling were among the field at the Newton Aycliffe 10k on a lovely sunny Sunday morning. The road course had 1 short lap and 2 long laps, with Ian finishing in 81.36 and Marian 83.53. The previous day they were at the Stonehaven Park Run supporting their daughter, Valerie, on her 100th Park Run. This again was a 3 lap trail course, with a significant hill to be traversed three times! Ian came 63rd out of 66 in 40.12 and Marian 64th in 42.24....

Arts Charity Celebrates National Lottery Grant with Visit from BBC Countryfile

Thirsk-based charity Rural Arts has been awarded a grant of just over £70,000 by The National Lottery’s Community Fund for their project Heart and Craft. The project provides free, friendly and relaxed art activities for over 50s in eight communities across Hambleton. The monthly sessions, run by professional artists, take place in local village halls, as well as the charity’s own base, The Courthouse in Thirsk. “By far, the most popular activity is pottery, followed by drawing, painting and printmaking”, says the project’s organizer, Sorcha McCole. “As the year progresses, we’ll be introducing intergenerational activities and events to celebrate the work made by the groups”. The Thirsk group, which was initially funded by Arts Council England, has a regular attendance of 20 members....

Freddie’s Fight Reaches £250,000 Target

Freddie’s Fighters, a group fundraising to send three year old Freddie Thompson to America for medical treatment, are delighted to announce they have surpassed their original target of £250,000. Starting the fundraising in February, the group quickly garnered support from their local community and from nowhere sprung coffee mornings, dinner dances, sporting events and personal challenges. The support of the local community around Hambleton and Ryedale has been astounding and what once seemed an impossible task has seen them achieve their goal. With donations still coming in and events still in the calendar it has given Freddie’s parents, Philip and Emily, the option to consider further maintenance treatments following the vaccination....

SNUG BUGS

Insects in Sowerby are feeling ‘snug’ thanks to three hotels built specially for them. Volunteers from The Clock (pictured) have created three bug hotels at the Sowerby Environmental Space Project - to attract a wide variety of mini-beasts. They provide spaces in between twigs, bamboo, cobbles, broken pieces of pottery and tiles, for insects to set up home. And as well as the hotels, 36 bird boxes have been installed to provide safe places for birds to nest; and hedgehogs can travel in and out of the area safely thanks to holes which have been installed along the perimeter fence....

Thirsk Royal British Legion Band are delighted to announce the appointment of their new Musical Director, Stuart Shields. Originally from South Shields, in his playing days Stuart spent many years as principal euphonium player with many bands in the North East and Cumbria. He performed in many competitions as a soloist, winning the Consett Musical Festival Millennium Award For Outstanding Performance, leading him to perform at the West Yorkshire Playhouse with all the other Regional winners....

LONG AWAITED JUNCTION OPENS

The long awaited Sowerby Junction opened to traffic overnight Monday 3rd June. The new £6.5 million junction with the A168 is part of the infrastructure stipulated within planning permission for the new homes at Sowerby Gateway. Local district councillor – and leader of Hambleton District Council - Mark Robson said: “We have waited a long time for this junction. It is going to make a massive difference to people living on the new Sowerby Gateway estate as well as to Sowerby and Thirsk in general....

After a feast of races last weekend, it was something of a famine this week, with members perhaps saving themselves for the next HDSRL fixture at Ripon on Tuesday! 15 members were involved with Park Runs, with 5 out of the entry of 426 at Fountains Abbey. Ian Crane, testing himself and trying to overcome a reccurring injury, 171st in 27.48, Nigel Morgan 212th in 29.03, Linda Bamforth 271st in 31.30, Ian Codling 387th in 39.14 and Marian Codling 395th in 40.05....

Go-Kart Fever Returns to Cundall

Over 30 daredevil pupils from a local North Yorkshire school provided some high octane entertainment for a large crowd of friends and family as the annual Cundall Go-Kart Race returned to the leading school. Hundreds of spectators watched under beautiful blue skies as the 26 homemade Go-Karts provide speed, theatre and some spectacular but safe crashes at Cundall Manor School last Friday (24 May). This year saw friends Hugo and Henry, retain the top spot on the podium for a second year running following a morning of fun and heart-stoppingly mad-cap racing....

A very busy week began last Tuesday on a fine evening, with the first event in the HDSRL hosted at Harrogate by Harrogate Harriers, mostly on road with a couple of long uphills. This was also a club Championship race and 31 Harriers were involved, the first home being Ken Wood, apparently fully recovered from his London Marathon efforts. He came 46th out of a large field of 531, in 39.18, with Stephan Tomaszewski, always competitive, 61st in 40.04, Josh Cooper 71st in 40.44, Mike Cropper 111th in 42.38, Matt Jones 119th in 43.16, Esther Harrison 153rd in 44.54, David Tervit 170th in 45.32, Adrian Saunders 172nd in 45.42, Martyn Coy 184th in 46.06, Gary Wilkinson 232nd in 48.00, Paul Bradford 247th in 48.40....

MP Joins Charity Walk To Raise Money For Antibiotic Resistance

Thirsk and Malton MP, Kevin Hollinrake, has taken part in a sponsored walk in aid of ANTRUK, a North Yorkshire charity close to his heart. ANTRUK is the world’s first charity dedicated to tackling antibiotic resistance, which is one of the most urgent threats to public health. Antibiotic resistant bacteria can cause dangerous infections that were once easily treatable. As a result, around 750,000 people die every year from resistant infections – a figure which is predicted to rise to 10 million people a year by 2050 according to Lord O’Neill of Gatley’s Review of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)....

The outgoing Chairman of Hambleton District Council has handed over £830 charity. Councillor David Blades chose the Yorkshire Air Ambulance which has a base at Topcliffe near Thirsk to support during his year in office. “Since it was established in 2000 the service has carried 7,866 patients with life threatening injuries to hospitals. It serves a population of five million people over four million acres. Every single penny raised goes direct to keeping this vital service running....

Jerry Green Dog Rescue Gets Agile

Jerry Green Dog Rescue has acquired agility equipment for some of its centres that will not only benefit the dogs in its care, but the Charity also hopes to raise much needed income by hiring out the facilities to a growing number of dog lovers who see agility as a way of connecting with their beloved pets. The equipment, which is of competition standard, is set up in paddocks at the centres and includes an A frame, dog walk, see saw, competition weavers, tunnels and adjustable competition jumps....
