In March we welcomed Sue Maddocks from Halifax. Her theme, 'At This Time Of Year', started with a depiction of early spring. A woven circle of willow twigs resembled a bird's nest and included pussy willow, purple iris and yellow tulips. The next, a triangle of flowers grouped on a hessian-draped piece of wood, included pink hyacinths and Amaryllis, with Fatsia and Bergenia leaves. 'Cornucopia' held green orchids, purple callas and carnations, and rosemary....

The busiest day of the year for the club dawned fine and bright for the 41st running of Thirsk 10, with a record turnout of 1042 finishers. With the previous week having gale force winds, and the previous day very wet, the club felt fortunate indeed to have such a good day, though wind was certainly a factor round the course. The winner of the race was Rob Scott of Richmond and Zetland in 53.38 with Dean Newton and Allan Harry of New Marske Harriers 2nd and 3rd respectively. The winner of the Ladies' race was Georgia Cambell of Jarrow and Hebburn, 39th overall, in 59.37, with Tracey Millmore of Birtley AC 2nd and Charlotte Ward of Hallamshire 3rd (photo by Karen Harland)....

What happens in Thirsk at night? I’m not thinking of the “night economy” of pubs, clubs, restaurants and the odd cocktail bar, or the meetings of enthusiasts for history or model railways, or even the ever-so-slightly tedious meetings of local councils or churches. I am thinking of the little acts of vandalism or unpleasant behaviour that the police class as “collective harm”, little things that make life unpleasant by their repetition.
Local resident Karen Botterill felt that there was an undercurrent of bad behaviour locally and that there was no connection between residents, police and councillors, and managed to arrange a public meeting for local people, particularly shopkeepers, and some councillors, with a panel of Police Inspector Dave Allen, Will Naylor the Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner and Gina Allen of Hambleton District Council’s Safer Hambleton programme....

Ladies 1sts made the long trip to top of the league Lindum for their final league match of the season. Fielding an understrength side with young Yasmin Marshall helping out with a last minute call up, Thirsk started slowly and conceded a scrappy 2nd minute goal but responded well, defending brilliantly and creating chances. They managed to keep Lindum down to 1 nil at halftime.
With the two sides evenly matched, chances were created with keepers from both sides excelling. Lindum scored a second goal halfway through the half, which was quickly followed by a third goal....

Meanwhile at the Town Hall Thirteen Group, who run Orchid House in Sowerby and similar elsewhere, were holding a public viewing of plans to build 97 affordable houses in a group on Sowerby Gateway, this to put right to some extent the failure of for-profit developers to provide the affordable units that should have been part of the whole development. Thirteen Group is a not-for-profit organization and have taken advantage of the lack of a need for profit to make a design with lower density, featuring a tree-lined boulevard which “references historic Sowerby”, in other words is based on the trees that line Front Street (and drop sticky stuff onto parked cars in the summertime). The site is close to the railway line, but this can be addressed with triple glazing. The mix of housing, from bungalows to 4-bedroom houses, has been worked out with the District Council to reflect need....

Thirsk travelled to play 3rd placed York with a squad of 15. From the start, it was clear that the opposition were a much stiffer challenge than in recent weeks, denying Thirsk time on the ball and competing hard for every loose ball.
Thirsk's defence were given a tough work out in open play and also at a series of short corners, but Sam Ross Russell in goal was a match for every attack, getting away from his line to smother many shots, and recovering from a first dive to be ready for the second shot. Thirsk survived until half time, when they slightly reorganized, dropping one of the attackers to provide more depth in midfield....

I am sure you have heard of all the brilliant fundraising that is happening across the region for “Freddie’s Fight” I can not believe how the whole community has come together to help with the fundraising.
My son Joseph McDonald & his friend Gina Gray originally saw the Children’s Cancer television advert and wanted to do something to raise some money so that ‘more children can ring the bell’ (their own words) and as Freddie and his family are close friends of both families they decided to do a sponsored walk together to raise money....
