MP secures further action on NHS dentist delays in Helmsley and Thirsk...

25th March, 2022.

I am delighted to have secured further action from Minister Caulfield this week about the backlog of patients waiting to be seen by NHS dentists in Helmsley and Thirsk. She has agreed to chase NHS commissioners in both areas about the delays in appointments and treatments that constituents are facing. As constituents know I have been pressing ministers for many months now both privately and in Parliament and this is another positive step...... The Gasman Diggeth...

17th March, 2022.

With road works it’s a case of one hole closes and another opens. The traffic is flowing again through Carlton Miniott now that Yorkshire Water have mended their sewer pipe, but there will be major works in Thirsk town centre for a few weeks. Northern Gas Networks is replacing some old steel gas mains with shiny new plastic ones. Bridge Street and Millgate will be closed in stage 1 of the works, and when that is completed Finkle Street will be next...... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers...

17th March, 2022.

The major event of the Club's calendar year took place at the weekend in the form of the Thirsk 10, a race on roads which attracts runners of a high class, as well as others who just run for the fun of it, from far and wide. A fine dry morning is always welcome, and thus it turned out, though a tail wind at the beginning of the race became a very definite head wind after the turnaround point on Skipton Airfield. It was cold enough for marshals standing around, but runners commented that they much appreciated the support and encouragement they received around the course. A large number of members were involved in enabling the race to take place, under the gentle and clear guidance of Race Director, Ken Wood and his second in command, Duncan Fothergill...... At a meeting of Hambleton District Council’s Cabinet, Members approved the grant which will see community projects right across the Hambleton district benefitting. 53 community projects will receive grants from the council’s ‘Making a Difference’ fund with the largest grant of £24,000 going to Parochial Church Council of St Oswald’s Sowerby to help with refurbishing their community hall...... Ukraine aid...

11th March, 2022.

This is what kindness and love looks like: scores and scores of big cardboard boxes, filled with all manner of humanitarian aid and labelled in English and Ukrainian, donated by good people in and around Thirsk at various collecting points, then transferred initially to a barn and then to an empty industrial unit, to be sorted into boxes by countless volunteers, then loaded into vans and transported to Poland for distribution. I saw boxes labelled with various types and sizes of clothing, socks and gloves, sleeping bags, blankets, medicines being sorted by a retired GP and his wife, toiletries, nappies, baby milk, candles, cleaning products, dog and cat food, cooking oil, dried food, and so on...... Atlantic Rower visits Thirsk Community Primary School...

11th March, 2022.

HOW lucky are we!!????? We had a visit from the Amazing sportswoman Jasmine Harrison. Jasmine is an eminent English personality who shocked everyone across the globe with her passion and dedication for rowing. She is officially the youngest ever solo Atlantic rower. The children listened so carefully to her talking and she was very inspiring (we will not be rowing across the Atlantic anytime soon though!). Everyone had interesting questions to ask Jasmine about her adventures and how she felt...... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Yorkshire to Ukraine...

11th March, 2022.

Currently the Twisted Automotive showroom is now being used as an aid collection depot - we have moved our defenders out temporarily. Twisted company vans, along with other local vans will be used to transport the good/aid to the Poland/ Ukraine boarder. I believe this is a return 3,000 mile journey and was due to depart Monday 7th March. Director of Twisted Automotive, Charles is participating on the journey. We have had some generous donations but we need to spread the word. We are in desperate need of new: bedding, food, sanitary items, medication. The people of Thirsk have come together to source much needed aid for Ukraine, with drop off points throughtout the market town...... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Carlton Miniott road closed...

11th March, 2022.

There has not been much traffic out of town recently on the A61 through Carlton Miniott, because unless you are on a cycle you can’t get through. Just by the Dog & Gun and the Evangelical Church there has been a mighty hole in the road. I drove out to inspect and found a tracked digger excavating soggy soil from the hole, which was protected from collapse by steel shutters...... A New Crematorium...

4th March, 2022.

The new facility should be open in mid or late March. It is a well-equipped place, set in 22 acres of peaceful countryside. Families, friends and celebrants will no longer face the drive to and from York, Harrogate or Darlington. To begin, there is a lot of car-parking, including disabled spaces near the main building. The young trees and bushes will mature, and the pond will doubtless attract wild-fowl. Inside is a waiting area with seating – no need to stand around on a cold, wet day or wait in cars. There is a spacious main room. The furniture is from local maker Treske. One side of the room gives a view away to the Hambleton Hills, and the atmosphere is airy...... Unfortunate day for Thirsk Falcons vs Kader...

4th March, 2022.

After a non starter the previous week, with bad weather stopping play, expectations were higher for a sunnier, if cold and blistery, day at Sowerby Gateway against Kader. Thirsk Falcons fielded a smaller team list again, and this showed at times. Right from the start, Kader seemed to mean serious business and took Thirsk Falcons by surprise by scoring within the first five minutes, when a surge down the centre left a large gap in the home defences and allowed Kader to score and easy first goal...... NEW CREMATORIUM NAMED IN MEMORY OF WW2 HEROES...

4th March, 2022.

An official naming ceremony has been held at the new Crematorium near Thirsk. The multi-million-pound, council led development which has been named Maple Park in memory of the members of the Royal Canadian Airforce who sadly lost their lives in the area during WW2, is now complete, and will open for ceremonies in March. A commemorative boulder was unveiled as part of the ceremony by Royal Canadian Airforce representative, Colonel James Hawthorne, the Air Force Advisor at the High Commission of Canada in London. Also in attendance were members of the Friends of Leeming Aviation Group (FLAG), the Leader of the Council, local Councillors and Hambleton District Council officers...... Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers...

4th March, 2022.

A couple of members have been hitting the air waves in the last week or two. Rob Burn was invited by Radio York to discuss his award for Innovative Coach of the Year for Yorkshire and Humberside. They were interested in his personal experiences as a runner over the last 40 years or so, and these are many and varied. His favourite terrain is off-road, but he can put on a mean display on the roads as well! In his early days, he and his brother Mervyn were always in the top half dozen finishers in local races, and nowadays, he is likely to be 1st or 2nd in his age-group, regardless of terrain......
