A number of crews dealt with a fire at the Foresters Arms Pub who were called at 8.30pm Tuesday 21st May. All persons evacuated prior to arrival of fire crews. Crews worked with hose reel jets to extinguish the fire. One crew remained in attendance throughout the night/morning, damping down.
This was a fire in the pub which is believed to have started outside at the rear of the building and then spread to the rest of the property. A thick plume of smoke was seen for miles when travelling North toward Kilburn. However, fire investigations into the cause will be taking place over the coming days....

Five Ladies from Thirsk trained for three months ready for a through the night 26.2 mile ‘Moonwalk’ on Clapham Common on the 11th and 12 May 2019 in aid of Breast Cancer Charities.
The group, who named themselves ‘The Disco Divas’ were, Tracey Ashton, Gillian Pyman, Angie Elders, Mandi Dyson and Annette Steel all from Thirsk. They contributed over £3,000 towards over £3million raised to date this year for Breast Cancer charities....

North Yorkshire Youth (NYY) a children and young people’s charity based at Carlton Lodge Activity Centre near Thirsk has hosted a workshop about Radon Gas with senior figures in the activity and caving community.
George Plant, chief instructor at Carlton Lodge said: “This is an important topic for us as our youth activities include caving and it is important that we fully understand the dangers so that we can keep our young activity students safe. Our contribution to this workshop and its outcomes will ensure that we are covering these issues which add value to our work without detracting from the enjoyment that our young people have with their caving activities”....

Another life-saving defibrillator has joined the more than a dozen in and around Thirsk. The latest to appear is at the Crown and Anchor pub on Front Street in Sowerby. Local businessman Steven Dresser has paid for this piece of equipment and for its installation, and has previously met the installation costs at other locations. He said he was happy to work with the Community First Responder team and support their work, and to put something back into the community where he lives and works....

Sunday 12th May saw Thirsk Hockey Club take part in the England Hockey U14 Girls National Championships at Reading Hockey Club. They were there competing against the top teams in the country most of which it is fair to say are from “down south” and are huge in comparison to little old Thirsk HC, so just being there was a fantastic achievement for this team....

Outdoor enthusiast, Dave Herron from Thirsk, is gearing up to take on his second challenge in less than 12 months in a bid to raise vital funds for Marie Curie following the passing of his mum back in April 2018.
Last Saturday in May, Dave and fellow fundraiser, Jason Oglesby, will tackle the National Three Peaks Challenge in 24 hours. This will involve them driving 462 miles and climbing a total ascent of 3,064 meters (10,052ft) to the summits of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon....

Youngsters from Thirsk White Horse Swim Club had a busy weekend representing the club in galas across the county, including competing at the Swim England North East Regional Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.
Ben Dale-Wood, a year 6 pupil at Carlton Minniott Primary School was racing in the 100m Breast and 50m Freestyle on Saturday and the 50m Breast on Sunday....

On 2nd May, we welcomed Alina Harland of Thirsk, to run a demonstration and workshop. She began with informally-styled spring/summer arrangements, with many options for wild or garden foliage and flower material. This was followed by ideas for displaying house plants such as orchids, as well as tips on their care and maintenance....

The pupils (and staff!) at Sessay Primary School were very excited this week with the delivery and installation of a Tipi. The Tipi has been erected in their Forest School Area providing a fantastic outdoor sheltered space to add to our school grounds....

The Dave Parry Summer Series of fell races got underway last week on a calm, sunny evening. The ground underfoot was hard following a long, dry spell, for the Gribdale Growler, and the field of 123 enjoyed the course. Tom Levi, unstoppable just now, was again first club finisher, 4th in 40.46, Matt Jones 42nd in 49.45, Brett Edgeworth 45th in 50.35, Esther Harrison 61st in 52.50, Lorraine Hiles 66th, and 1st F55, in 53.44, Marc Davies 73rd in 54.52, Hilary Coventry 81st, and 2nd F55, in 57.40, Helen Ashworth 94th in 60.21 and Trudy Morrice 97th in 61.59....

A popular family-run holiday park located on the edge of the North York Moors has been awarded a prestigious accolade by a leading holiday provider.
York House Holiday Park, near Thirsk, has been named by Hoseasons as a Diamond Award finalist in the Relax & Explore small parks category for the North of England. It was just one of three parks to receive the award, and the only one from Yorkshire....

The Mayor of Thirsk, Hazel Dalgleish-Brown had a very pleasant task to perform this week. She was at the Herriot Hospice Homecare shop in Thirsk to hand over a very big cheque, the sort designed for photo calls. There to receive it was Lucy Turner, head of fund-raising for the charity. The amount was £7,180, half the proceeds of the Mayor’s Ball held at the end of March. “We are absolutely delighted,” said Lucy. “As a small charity this is a huge sum and will have a big impact on the local community....

Thirsk headed back to Weetwood for the final round of fixtures in the league, hoping to secure the Yorkshire title. The opening game was against newly promoted Harrogate, and Thirsk duly welcomed them to the A league by opening the scoring within 10 seconds when Lexi Ramshay drilled in a shot from the top of the D. A minute later Lily Fyfe doubled the lead with a finish at the back post after good work from Phoebe Evans driving through the midfield. Emilla Sample added a 3rd by tapping in a cross from Lexi, before Lexi got her second of the match with a brilliant solo run.... all of this within the first 4 minutes. Thirsk took their foot off the gas after that and were content to protect their lead and save their legs for harder games to come....

Ritz volunteer Howard Wooldridge made an interesting discovery when lifting carpets in the cinema's back office.
Howard said "Just like in an older house you never know just what you'll find when you lift the carpets. People regularly put current newspapers down before laying their carpets - probably rarely done now with professional fitters and underlay, but it's always a bit of a distraction when you start reading the pages laid down all those years earlier. I was pretty surprised though when I discovered these were from 1937....

Thirsk RBL Band played a fabulous concert last Friday night at Felixkirk Church! If you weren’t there you missed a treat! Well done to the soloists, (Libby and Hannah) and the Band for putting on a great performance, Rachel for conducting for the first time and a very special appreciation to Charles Clark for being a brilliant Musical Director....
