Thirsk Swim Team news

#

29th November, 2019.

It was a successful trip to the seaside for Thirsk White Horse Swim Team on Saturday. Thirty young swimmers travelled to Scarborough to compete in the Scarborough and District Swim Championships. Our swimmers were competing against ten other clubs from across Yorkshire and we came away with 80 medals, 33 golds, 30 silvers and 17 bronze medals as well as 72 PBs. It was great to see our older, experienced swimmers cheering on our younger swimmers....

Thirsk Hockey Club - Thirsk Ladies 2s

#

29th November, 2019.

The goal scoring this week was decidedly ‘book-end-ish’ - with Jenna and Molly A poking goals in five minutes into the match and five minutes before the final whistle. The dramatic tension was only heightened by the gloomy mist that shrouded the pitch the entire match. Despite only having 11, like all the other ladies teams this week, and Adel having a very noisy 16, we fought hard and never gave up, even when we had two goals scooped off the line by annoyingly diligent defenders! Final score 2-2 Leeds Adel....

Disappointing game for Thirsk Town in cup match

#

29th November, 2019.

After another wet week, Thirsk Town travelled to Kirklington to play in the Bob Seymour Cup in the Hillsprint Hambleton Football Combination on a tiny pitch which dismayed the visitors. From the outset, this was going to be hard game to play effective soccer on such a limiting and limited pitch, where any kick could take the ball to the other end, and was far from conducive to good, flowing passing football. Kirklington attacked and defended vigorously and saw several attempts at goal almost succeed, if Thirsk Town’s hard worked defenders had not countered just as effectively. Kirklington constantly harassed the referee at every tackle and commented loudly throughout from the side-lines and there were several flair-ups on the pitch when players were goaded into comments back or actual pushes....

World First for Languages at World of James Herriot

#

22nd November, 2019.

World of James Herriot in Thirsk has installed a visitor attraction ‘world first for languages’ at the Award Winning attraction that provides guests with a fully guided tour of the attraction on their own device in any language. Visitors simply point their smartphone or tablet at a QR code on each exhibit and the APP converts the description into the visitors’ own language either in text or audio. The ‘world first’ is provided by Papillon Translations whose native speakers and professional translators have first-hand knowledge of the target markets. This is not only important for accuracy but also to be able to provide in-depth knowledge of local and cultural influences. This also ensures the translations acknowledge the target audience and sensitivity of the local environment, that may not be obvious to the casual translator....

Rural Arts awarded £130,000 grant from Arts Council England

#

22nd November, 2019.

Thirsk charity Rural Arts is just one of nine arts organizations in Yorkshire to have been awarded an Arts Council England Small Capital grant. The £130,000 investment will allow Rural Arts to make much needed refurbishments and improvements to its Grade II listed arts centre. The focus of these works are to increase the charity’s financial resilience and environmental credentials. “In the face of a climate crisis, we all need to be asking ourselves: how can we be doing more?”, says Director and CEO Max May. “As well as running an arts centre, Rural Arts works across 3,500 square miles, meaning one of our biggest emissions is from vehicles. Our grant from Arts Council England includes money to purchase an electric van, which will reduce these by 85%....

Jammed up

#

22nd November, 2019.

This has not been a good week to drive into town. The problem lay in Castlegate, a street name that is a reminder of the time when this town had a fine castle adjoining the market place, until it was pulled down in about 1176 on the instructions of Henry II in the aftermath of an unsuccessful rebellion. The road was half closed while men in bright jackets dug away, and traffic light control was in force. The inevitable result was a jam back along Westgate and even down into Finkle Street. Those in the know took diversionary routes along Cemetery Road and Newsham Road....

Remembrance

#

15th November, 2019.

One thing is certain, that as the years go on and despite the growing distance between today and the major conflicts of the 20th Century, we do remember. Over recent years the number of people turning out on a cold November Sunday to pay respect to the dead of two world wars and since has grown. It is one hundred years since the first Act of Remembrance on Armistice Day 1919. Last week a group of children from Sowerby Primary came to the war memorial to hear something of the men whose names live there for ever. Steve Billings has written a book about them and was able to put describe the lives of local men, including one teacher, and some of the experiences they would have had in the Great War....

On Parade

#

15th November, 2019.

I was privileged to attend a medal parade at Alanbrooke Barracks at Topcliffe to mark the return from overseas duty of members of the 4th Royal Artillery. 282 men and women of the regiment had been in Cyprus, wearing the blue berets of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force. Under an Australian commander, this force of about 900 drawn from various countries patrols the borderline between the Greek and Turkish sides of the island. Now they were to receive the UN medal, and for many of them it would be their first medal. The weather that day in Cyprus was warm, T-shirt and shorts weather. Not so at Topcliffe....

Thirsk Town Battled Successfully Against Tithe Barn 4:2

#

8th November, 2019.

Thirsk Town once again travelled to Northallerton to play Tithe Barn in a Hillsprint Hambleton Football Combination league, second division, match last weekend. The going was soft on the pitch, and it was not helped by rain showers, but Thirsk Town largely controlled this game throughout. Liam Cook out tackled the opposition and scored the first goal after twelve minutes of fierce action. Tithe was given a penalty soon after, but this was squandered in an inaccurate shot, and Town was let off the equalizer. Tithe Barn could only try several long distance attempts, mainly without great success, and worked hard to get the ball to the attackers, sometimes successfully, but was thwarted much of the time by a strong Town defence throughout....

Thirsk Hockey Club U10 boys travelled to Weetwood on Sunday...10 A Team

#

8th November, 2019.

U10A Boys played in Division 1 for the first time this season. The boys played very well with a particularly strong performance from George & Thomas in defence. Having worked hard in training on developing the back three (defenders & GK) communicating and working as a team within the team and it shone through on the day. Midfield and forwards also played consistently well, connecting out wide in attack and maintaining a solid defensive press making life very difficult for the opposition to enter the Thirsk D....

Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers

#

8th November, 2019.

Surely one of the toughest races around is the Guy Fawkes 10, mostly on roads with some severe hills, like a fell race without the mud! It is perhaps appropriate that the first club finisher was Fawkes, David Fawkes! In a strong field, he came 53rd in 69.53 with Rob Burn, in a fine vein of form just now, 145th in 58.57, and 1st M65 prizewinner. Ever present David Tervit was 150th in 79.00, Alan Simpson 174th in a PB time by a minute of 1.20.53. Alan likes running fast down hills, and there was plenty of opportunity for that! Adrian Saunders came 177th in 1.20.59, Kirsty Naylor 263rd in 1.25.13 (photo courtesy Christine Burn)....

Thirsk Town win again in a Hillsprint cup game

#

1st November, 2019.

Last Sunday, Thirsk Town travelled to Northallerton to play Oddies WMC in an exciting Bob Seymour Trophy cup game in the Hillsprint Hambleton Sunday league match, in fairly dry and almost sunny weather at times despite all the recent downpours which had threatened to postpone games. After a promising start, it was Oddies which gained first blood, with a good goal after eight minutes of tense action. Thirsk Town should have been on top but still lacked accuracy at times in their goal action but made up for mid field domination and much of the possession. The game was one that was fiercely fought at both ends. It took Town thirty two minutes to achieve their first goal, the equalizer, when James Spence was passed the ball and took on the Oddies defenders and goalkeeper, and won through....

Projecting

#

1st November, 2019.

The work of cinema projectionist has evolved over the years. The giant reels of film which have to be rewound after each showing have given way to digital, and for this the Ritz is equipped with a large modern machine which always makes me think of a fridge on its side. On most nights it is projectionist Peter Barr, who gives up his time to ensure the films are shown without a hitch....
