What a week it has been at Thirsk Community Primary School the children have enjoyed visits from The History Squad and Historical Interpretations, showing them life from the Stone Age to Iron Age, how the Vikings lived and fought. They also got to hold Vikings shields and swords and stage a fake battle! We also managed to get out and about around Thirsk following the History Plaque trail and finished with a visit to Thirsk Museum...... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Thirsk Falcons Seniors played Fishburn Park...

26th November, 2021.

Thirsk Falcons Senior Team played host to Fishburn Park on Saturday at their home base at Sowerby Gateway last Saturday in cold and blustery conditions in the North Riding league. The first half of the game was evenly matched, with neither team co-ordinating successful attacks on rival goals, although both goalkeepers made good saves to defend their teams and it was nil, nil at half time. There were signs of keen rivalry and suspect tackles by both teams to gain the upper hand, amid increasingly loud shouts and more vociferous protests to the referee, who, once again this season, had to struggle without any lines officials in support. It was noticeable that Thirsk Falcons lacked subs again in a somewhat scratch squad and they were struggling to maintain the pressure to attack in a coordinated manner without support, and the constant injuries on and off the field did not help...... Friarage family room given a makeover...

26th November, 2021.

A ROOM used to support patients at the end of life, and their families, at the Friarage has been given a makeover thanks to the generosity of a local charity. The family room in the hospital’s Romanby Ward is often used by families as a quiet place to relax and spend vital time together away from the ‘ward’ environment. Thanks to The Cowtonbury Fundraising Team the room has been transformed from an outdated space into a homely, welcoming and modern room. Since 2014 the team, set up by Beth Robinson the landlady of The Beeswing Inn at East Cowton, has raised over £120,000 to improve health and palliative care services and spaces across Hambleton and Richmondshire...... Remembrance...

19th November, 2021.

Last year’s remembrance ceremonial was reduced by the coronavirus restrictions to a shell of its normal self, but this year there were no bans on gathering, and I saw probably more people attend the Sunday Act of Remembrance than I have seen before. But first, on Thursday, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month the town centre saw a simple service, with the Last Post sounded as the blessed hour came when hostilities in Europe ceased 103 years ago. Agreed at 5.10am that day in 1918, an armistice, initially for 36 days, ended all fighting on land, sea and in the air between the Allies and Germany. It would be extended until the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 ended the state of war...... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Thirsk Falcons U14s v Bishop Auckland...

19th November, 2021.

Thirsk’s Remembrance Sunday game was a very exciting affair against Bishop Auckland. We were with a full 11 today but without any reinforcements on the bench meaning we had to be at our best all the way through. We started well and took the lead early in the first half and controlled the first half throughout through confident defending looking to counter immediately with pace and with numbers. Unfortunately we weren’t able to hit the back of the net again having hit the post and their keeper making a string of excellent saves to keep us out and running away with the game...... Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers...

19th November, 2021.

The Dave Parry Winter Series of fell races continue at the weekend with the Saltergate Gallows, with 4 miles added to the usual distance, making it about 12.7 miles, and doubling the ascent to about 600 feet. It was used as a qualifier for the Yorkshire Three Peaks race, and was, and is likely to be, the toughest race of the series. As it was Remembrance Sunday, a respectful 2 minutes silence was held before the race got underway. The weather was cool and dry, but previous wet weather meant there was mud aplenty with some tricky patches and slippery descents...... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Temporary repairs will allow popular Thirsk footpath to reopen...

19th November, 2021.

Temporary repairs to the footpath connecting St James Green with Marage Road in Thirsk will enable it to reopen next month. North Yorkshire County Council closed the public right of way in May after reports of cracks and movement of the pavement. An underwater survey together with detailed inspections have been carried out following the removal of vegetation along the route. This has revealed that the retaining wall has been severely affected by river erosion, damaging and reducing the structural integrity of the footpath leading to the iron footbridge...... Thirsk RBL Band Are Back!...

12th November, 2021.

The last couple of years have been difficult for many people including the band. Initially practices came to a holt because of COVID and then, due to unforeseen circumstances, we had to find a new rehearsal room. After many hours of searching and trialling different venues, we have now found a new home in Knayton Village Hall...... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Holy Rood...

12th November, 2021.

Holy Rood House in Sowerby is a calm and welcoming place with hospitality at its heart, a centre for health and pastoral care. Its trustees are now celebrating a major funding success, raising the £1 million needed to buy the freehold of the building and gardens. The money came from local people and farther away, and the purchase has now been completed, enabling the Charity to continue to provide professional care for many local people and others from across Britain who find their way to this welcoming house at a time of need...... Another serious assault in Thirsk...

12th November, 2021.

Detectives have arrested a 22-year-old local man in connection with a serious assault in Thirsk. The incident occurred near Thirsk Industrial Estate at around 5.35pm on Monday 1 November 2021. The victim, a 32-year-old man from the Thirsk area, remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition. Officers made the arrest on Monday (8 November) afternoon and the man is being held in custody for questioning...... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers...

12th November, 2021.

The Guy Fawkes 10, organized by Nidd Valley Runners, the latest club championship race, is probably one of the toughest events on the calendar, and always very popular - 739 finishers this year. It is multi terrain, based at Ripley, with some long hard hills on the road - and the man himself starts the race! Appropriately, perhaps, and for the second year in a row, the first Thirsk and Sowerby member home was David Fawkes, taking 64.22, a full five minutes quicker than when he did the race in 2019, and 30 finishing places higher. Very well done...... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Yarmbombers remembering...

5th November, 2021.

Our wonderful Yarnbombers have once again created their magic with a display of knitted and crocheted poppies in the town centre. Some 60 bollards have been decorated with poppy-themed tops, together with a large cascade down the clock, not to mention toppings for post-boxes...... Leisure Centre...

5th November, 2021.

A visitor to Thirsk Leisure Centre could be forgiven for thinking that it was a completely new building. This was my first impression on an early look around. Hambleton District Council has spent over £4 million to bring it up to date; the building was closed for months; now it is stuffed with new equipment. The airy entrance and reception area to the Centre is beautifully furnished, with oak cladding and acoustic backing. I was taken for a tour of the new exercise and gym facility, a major extension of what had been not a bad-looking collection but was reckoned not to be big enough. Now there are rows of brand new machines for cycling, rowing, weight-lifting and I know not what else. The televisions on the walls to keep people entertained have gone, because these machines have them built in...... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers...

5th November, 2021.

One of the golden rules when doing a race is to get to there in good time so as not to miss the start of the race! Marc Davies, unfortunately, didn't apply this rule and, along with another runner, arrived too late to join the procession to the start of the Lockton Limping fell race, Race 2 in the Dave Parry/Lets Run winter series. The two of them spent some time circumnavigating the village before finding the snicket leading to the relevant field, some 10 minutes after the official starting time. Undaunted, they set off to catch up the rest of the field, and did so eventually, finding the going good on a course which is usually muddy, but was drier this year after a period with less rain...... Thirsk Falcons U14s v Linthorpe...

5th November, 2021.

The U14’s benefited from a later kickoff this Hallowe’en meaning most of the frightening weather that blighted many of the mornings games had past on to the other side and the sun had begun to shine for their game against Linthorpe. Despite being down to a skeleton crew forcing us to be outnumbered by the opposition we were the first to scare their defence and quickly took the lead with a well taken lob to open the scoring. Soon however Linthorpe we’re able to make their numerical advantage count and were terrorizing our defence scoring a number of goals. Thirsk, however, like Frankenstein’s monster came back to life towards the end of the half regrouping scoring a fantastic free kick from a very tight angle......
