To do it for more than 45 years – is amazing. Eric Campbell has done just that. He signed up with North Riding Fire Brigade on 18 April 1973 and worked his last shift with North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service on 18 October 2018. During that time he has attended an estimated 9,000 fire calls, 2,184 drill nights, been “on call” for 15,500 days including 44 Christmas Days and has held every operational role up to station officer....

I think about tonight - should I take my contact lenses out? Do homeless people wear contact lenses? I’m not sure if they do. I decide I’ll leave them in case I have to get my bearings quickly....

The legacy of James Herriot lives on. Last week I met up with three American vets, who were on a “pilgrimage” to The Surgery. Dr Ada Guzman from New York, and Drs Andrea Freeman and Deborah Ward both from New Jersey were in Thirsk on a vacation. They stopped off on their way to Inverness. “As young children we read those books and were inspired to become vets. Those books change young people's lives around the world!” they explained.
