Thirsk Hockey Ladies 3rds at Horforth

#

25th October, 2019.

Thirsk Ladies 3 travelled to Horsforth in what as expected, turned out to be our toughest match of the season so far. Having suffered a significant defeat away last season Thirsk took a strong team in the hope that we could hold out against their attack. The game began very evenly with both teams having a run on goal and good possession. However, as was also expected, umpiring decisions added to Thirsk’s troubles with a yellow card given to Thirsk inside the first 10 minutes. Thirsk held on. Horsforth then increased the pressure and the Thirsk goalie and defence worked hard for the last fifteen minutes as Horsforth took control. Despite their best efforts two gaols were conceded in the first half making it 2-0 to Horsforth....

Surviving Winter appeal launched to support vulnerable people in North & East Yorkshire

#

25th October, 2019.

Winter is coming, and for some this heralds a time of cold, misery and hardship, but there is help at hand. On Wednesday the Two Ridings Community Foundation launched its annual Surviving Winter Fund at the Yorkshire Rural Support Networks’ farming community lunch at Thirsk Mart. Members of the local farming community heard from James Naylor, Chair of Trustees of Two Ridings Community Foundation who explained how the Surviving Winter fund supports people across North & East Yorkshire who are elderly, vulnerable or struggling during the winter months....

Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers

#

25th October, 2019.

A busy weekend saw several members among the thousands at York for the various race distances on offer round the streets of York. On a dank, wet, still morning, with conditions good for running, Clare Tempest finished the 10 mile race in a very good 1.27.53, with Andrea Colls taking 1.34.12, Joanne Hunt 1.34.26, Emma Driffield 1.38.30, Sue Low 1.43.15 and Lianne Robinson 1.47.20. Well done, ladies. In the Marathon, Adrian Saunders completed his first ever race at that distance in 3.56.59 and was highly satisfied, as were Adrian Elsworth, 4.53.03 and Siobhan Woodland, 6.31.39. Well done again....

Phone-in-a-box

#

25th October, 2019.

As I noted last week, British Telecom are planning to remove a lot of the remaining payphones across the country. They have a national campaign going at the moment, from Devon to Scotland. They are targeting 18 boxes in Hambleton District Council’s area, and it is apparent from their figures that some of these are not being used at all. Over a 12 month period no calls, either paying or free (such as emergency calls), were made from the boxes at Brandsby, Felixkirk, and Osmotherley, only one from the box at Maunby, two from the box at Sutton, three at Thornton-le-Street and Kirby Wiske, and four at Skewsby. In Kilburn the phone was used 14 times. 40 calls were made in Brompton and 41 in South Otterington....

Thirsk Town goal fest

#

18th October, 2019.

After a poor cup game against a very strong Village Park Rangers from Stockton the previous week, Thirsk Town were back to full strength again, and with lots to prove, in a Hillsprint Hambleton Football Combination, division two, league match against Oddfellows Athletic, Northallerton. In truth, it turned in to something of a goal fest for Thirsk Town’s players, who could not believe their luck in this game, played in miserably wet conditions again on the Flatts. Oddfellows started well and seemed as if they might make a strong attack and gain an early goal, however, Town’s players had other ideas, and Liam Cook was passed the ball and struck the first goal for Thirsk Town....

Thirsk Hockey Club Match Reports

#

18th October, 2019.

Men's 1s report at home against Brigg 3s. Thirsk pressed the 10 man opposition from the start and scored early, when George Hunt put in a hard cross from the left onto the spot for Patrick Hunt to slip under the advancing keeper. With few alarms from the opposition, Thirsk continued to dominate possession without creating many further chances until Hughes played a weighted pass into space up the right for Jake Bowers to cross just within reach of Hunt's reverse stick for his second, leaving the keeper stranded....

Stay Happy

#

18th October, 2019.

I attended a very interesting event last week, called the Ageing Well Festival, at Thirsk Town Hall. It was aimed at those of us who are part of the older population and who are sometimes regarded as “economically inactive”. However, a lot of local life depends on retired lads and lasses who volunteer to do all sorts of things. I wondered what Ageing Badly involved, and thought about illness, increasing incapacity, loneliness, lack of money and generally lack of purpose. So how do we do it “well”? There were lots of answers....

Last call?

#

18th October, 2019.

The phonebox in the town centre is one of the last public payphones in Thirsk. BT are proposing to take it away, citing low use over a long period. The call box is the victim of the mobile phone, and it is ironic that I was called on my mobile to tell me of the discovery of the notice inside the call box. The next nearest callboxes are on Dowber Way and near the railway station....

ROTARY THIRSK IN BLOOM

#

11th October, 2019.

Last Spring Thirsk Rotary Club carried out a complete renovation of the planting in Thirsk Market Place. The old containers were cleared, an arduous task requiring the emptying of old compost and drainage materials. New containers with water reservoirs were then installed and filled with fresh compost., another strenuous task. Only then could planting begin, carried out with the help of Thirsk in Bloom volunteers. Their efforts have been repaid throughout the summer with the planters overflowing with flowers, creating colourful areas all over the Market Place....

#

11th October, 2019.

A 94-year-old Thirsk resident has been named the British Heart Foundation (BHF)’s regional volunteer of the year, in recognition of her contribution to the Thirsk BHF charity shop. Eileen Burnley has volunteered at the BHF shop in Thirsk for over 14 years. She walks a mile to the shop three or four times a week, and helps the team by sorting and tagging clothes ready for the shop floor. Joanna Goldberg, shop manager, said: “We wouldn't know what to do without Eileen – she is inspirational to us all and never lets us down. She’s here rain or shine. Thirsk Town win again over Great Broughton

#

5th October, 2019.

Despite less than friendly weather last Sunday, Thirsk Town met Great Broughton and Kirby Hibs on the Flatts in their Hillsprint Hambleton Football Combination league two match. In a moderately end to end match, Town’s Sam Marchant scored first an in a game where Thirsk Town fought for every ball and attacked constantly, although not always accurately and the goalkeeper was kept fairly busy. The opposition equalised before half time. In the second half, Town’s James Langton. Liam Cook’s third goal was disallowed by the referee....

A PRIMARY school rock band from a North Yorkshire School wowed a huge audience of festival goers as they recently took to the stage at Flamingo Land’s Party in the Park. Bangers and Thrash, a band of six nine year-olds from Cundall Manor School, won the chance to perform at the festival after winning the public vote in Minster FM’s Battle of the Bands with an impressive 27% of the vote. The boys got to perform at their biggest ever gig to date as part of a series of concerts held at Flamingo Land on the North York Moors....

U16 Girls Thirsk Hockey

#

5th October, 2019.

First round played at Thirsk, but bad weather does not stop this team. Fantastic performance from U16 A’s on Sunday, topping the YYHL: 3-0 win over Doncaster, 3-0 win over Sheffield, 3-1 win over Wakefield and all in rather nasty wet conditions. Given that this is the first time they’ve played together, and after not a huge amount of training, it’s clear there is a lot more to come from them....
