25th September, 2020.

Three times a year the club holds a Handicap, this year virtual, of course. Members are handicapped in times based on monthly time trials, which have been calculated by Duncan Fothergill, and their finishing times take this handicap into account. David Baker, coming back from injury, was the winner of the Summer shield this year, completing the 2 miles in 14.05 minutes on the night, self timed, of course. The ever improving Bev Davies, who also has had a tough few months with injury, took 20.32, a PB, with Wendy Bennett 3rd taking 22.50. Several members did PBs and Season's Bests, which running on the lovely new track at Sowerby Gateway gives opportunities.... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Stopping crime...

#

18th September, 2020.

What do you do if you see a crime or think you have some useful information about a suspect? Sometimes the fear of recriminations or the prospect of giving evidence in court puts people off; criminals and crime then go unchecked. That's where CrimeStoppers come in: anyone who calls in on their free phone number or reports something on their website is guaranteed anonymity. Neither CrimeStoppers nor the police will know the name or even the gender of the person making contact. Phone numbers or email addresses cannot be traced. On a sunny, clear Saturday morning CrimeStoppers set up stall in Thirsk market place with the assistance of Thirsk Rotarians in order to spread the word. The Yarnbombers had added some witty decorations to the bollards. Also there were the CAB, Community Works, Yorkshire Churches chaplaincy to farmers, the Royal Military Police and the Fire and Rescue Service, along with MP Kevin Hollinrake, Chairman of Hambleton District Council Mark Robson and celebrities Peter Wright and Ionica Adriana.... 18th September, 2020.

Thirsk and Malton MP, Kevin Hollinrake, has today shown support for British food and farming on Back British Farming Day, recognising the crucial role farmers play in producing food for the nation and caring for the countryside. The UK food and farming industry is worth more than £120 billion to the national economy and employs more than 4 million people, including thousands in his constituency. Mr Hollinrake wore a Back British Farming wool and wheatsheaf pin badge in Parliament today to publicly display his support at a crucial time for the agricultural sector against the backdrop of trade negotiations, including ongoing crucial talks with the EU.... Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers...

During the long lockdown period, some members found themselves having to shield for several weeks and one of these was Olivia Mulligan. Olivia has a creative bent and she put her time in isolation to good use writing poetry, the outcome being a volume, to be published shortly, entitled "Poems on the Gate Post". This has been well received and radio interviews have followed, with an invitation to appear in the Writer's Tent at the BBCs Upload Festival to read some of her poems. Look out for her book in the local book shop. At the opposite end of the spectrum, some running enthusiasts continue throughout to cover large numbers.... It happened to a vet...

#

12th September, 2020.

Julian Norton is an unassuming national tv celebrity, who chose our local pub to meet and discuss his career so far and his latest move. Over a glass of beer, he told me how delighted he – and Channel 5 – are at the latest audience figures for The Yorkshire Vet. The episode that went out immediately before the new version of All Creatures Great and Small attracted 2.1 million viewers, the largest audience for any episode so far. The Yorkshire Vet is now in its 11th series and has clocked up over 100 episodes. It is a far cry from the start of Julian’s and Peter Wright’s tv career. Daisybeck Studios in Leeds were commissioned to produce just six programmes in 2015.... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Greens Rules...

#

12th September, 2020.

Sowerby Parish Council has taken the opportunity to reissue to residents a copy of the Byelaws for the Regulation of the Greens, that attractive stretch of open grass with 74 lime trees that lies at the centre of the village. These regulations are made under the Public Health Act 1875, taking us back to a period of municipal empowerment when local authorities were encouraged to improve living conditions, following on from Acts with inspirational titles such as the Baths and Washhouses Act and the Labouring Classes Lodging Houses Act....
