Thirsk Falcons U9 Blues v FC Hartlepool Reds...

24th September, 2021.

The U8 Blues were in League Cup action today, drawn away to FC Hartlepool Reds. The game started evenly with both teams applying pressure and Falcons' goalkeeper making some amazing saves! Hartlepool broke the deadlock and soon added more goals but Falcons kept their shape well and continued to attack their opponent's goal. Falcons...... Back behind the bar...

24th September, 2021.

The Crown and Anchor in Sowerby has new management: Miles Bainbridge and Kirsty Wilkinson. This is a new link in the pub’s history. In 1912 Frederick Bainbridge became the landlord; his son Ted followed in 1936, and the family pattern continued with Miles’ great-grandfather Syd and “Nanna” Eva until 1971. Now, after a break of fifty years, a Bainbridge is back behind the bar pulling pints...... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Lambert we love you!...

17th September, 2021.

The passionate battle to keep the Lambert Memorial Hospital as a vital community asset should soon bear fruit. Given to the rapidly growing community of Thirsk and Sowerby in 1890 by Mrs Sara Lambert in memory of her husband and his father William Lambert, its role was to “supply medical and surgical aid and medicine for the sick and injured of Thirsk and neighbourhood.” It grew over the years, with extensions and new equipment often donated by local people. By 1949 it had 23 beds and that year 260 patients received treatment there. It provided accident and emergency services, and surgery, before increasingly specialist skills and equipment concentrated this work in larger acute hospitals. It was absorbed into the National Health Service In 1948...... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers...

17th September, 2021.

As very often happens, the latest club championship race, the Tholthorpe 10k, took place last weekend on a day which was warmer than forecast - the second water station, missing this year, would have been very welcome. It was the 25th running of the event, defered from last year because of covid and as ever, the friendly village atmosphere was much enjoyed by all. There is no stopping Paul Peacock just now, and he was first club member home, 10th out of 330 in a very good 37.27, with Matt Jones 25th in 39.18, Muhammad Umar a welcome new addition to the club, 31st in 40.02, Joe Poole 42nd in 41.39, Joe Lofthouse44th in 42.30...... Community Art...

17th September, 2021.

Thirsk and Sowerby Town Hall has its own piece of commissioned art – and a second piece is on the way. Now installed in the lobby is a large painting in acrylic executed by Megan Ballard when she was a sixth former at Thirsk School. At an unveiling ceremony last week, Chair of the Town Hall Management Committee Graham France explained how the theme was chosen because the Town Hall is itself a community asset, its hall and rooms used by many local groups. Megan, now studying at Leeds Art University explained how her A level course included a personal investigation into “self”, which prompted her to think about local places that were special to her as she grew up, one of which is Cod Beck, where she has walked “as long as I can remember...... Thirsk Station...

9th September, 2021.

As you may have read last week there is at last a proposal to build a new footbridge with lifts at our railway station (actually located in Carlton Miniott). As it is at present, this station is simply not fit for purpose for anyone carrying anything heavier or more bulky than a packet of crisps, or with children in tow or with any form of disability. Unless someone opens the gate across the southbound line to York, the platforms are only accessible via steep stairs open to the weather and there are very few facilities on the station itself...... Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers...

9th September, 2021.

The Bank Holiday weekend saw Marc Davies in his element with his three favourite fell races. Saturday saw the much anticipated return of the Pen Hill race at West Witton. Joe Lofthouse was first Harrier, 8th in 39.52 with Alan Simpson 12th in 42.26 and Marc Davies 16th in 43.46. All enjoyed supporting this classic low key event. Bank Holiday Monday brought another fell racing classic as part of the Hebden sports, part of the BOFRA championships and attracting a large entry of 103. The course is just over 1.5 miles, but with obstacles including a stream and 3 walls as well as 400 feet of ascent, is not for the faint hearted. Marc was pleased with 52nd place in 16.19...... 9th September, 2021.

A local hospice care charity has this year achieved a remarkable milestone and is calling on local people to support its family of services as part of its recently unveiled Grand Raffle. Since its launch in 2016, Herriot Hospice Homecare’s HOME service has travelled a million miles to ensure people affected by terminal illness get the care they need. Now, local people can help Herriot Hospice Homecare, an independent charity, continue to go the extra mile by purchasing a ticket in the Grand Raffle, which offers a first prize of £2,000...... Sutton Bank on the A170 between Helmsley and Thirsk will undergo an annual maintenance programme later this month. North Yorkshire County Council’s highways team will carry out the work which includes the inspection and maintenance of the rock face to ensure the route remains structurally safe in the future. Sutton Bank will remain closed until Sunday, September 26, for utility works by BT. “We have worked incredibly closely with BT to keep the timescale of their work to two weeks,” said Councillor Gareth Dadd, member for the Thirsk division. “They are able to carry out part of their work during our annual maintenance which will minimize disruption as much as possible...... THIRSK CLUB PLAYERS LAUNCH A RUGBY CRUSADE...

3rd September, 2021.

After the lack of 15 aside rugby for over 18 months, Thirsk RUFC senior men’s players took matters into their own hands after hearing the lifting of Rugby playing restrictions post Covid was happening 3 months ahead of the resumption of the 15 aside season, as a result a core of players got together and formed for the first time in the short history of the club a specific Rugby 7’s team, with the aim to compete in Rugby 7’s tournaments across the region over the 3 month Potential game void. “Thirsk Templars” were born, the name a tonge in cheek nod to historic knights of the Templar and their fierce protection of Christian beliefs but instead the founder players saw themselves as fighting to protect and keep alive the religion of rugby...... Scarecrow fun...

3rd September, 2021.

Knayton is an attractive village centred round its pub, the Dog and Gun, and its Village Hall, with a primary school half way to Borrowby, the next village. Village social life took a knock during the lockdown, and as the school summer holiday came along two young mums, Kirsty Bowers and Sarah Lane, came up with the idea of a village competition. Kirsty told me that in 2020 there was a sunflower competition, and in 2021 the village needed something to bring it together. They had the idea of scarecrows, to generate a bit of friendly competition and give the village children something to do during the holidays. I gather it also got some of the parents working hard too...... (TO READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE PLEASE SEE THE NEWSPAPER)

Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers...

3rd September, 2021.

Probably the last virtual race, at least for the time being, and probably the toughest, was the World Mountain Race in Kilburn Woods, and also incorporating the Kilburn 7. 108 members and guests were split into teams of 6, each team named after a country, with supposedly fast, slow and middle paced runners in each one. The course had many serious ups and downs taking in Hood Hill and at one point going up the steps beside the White Horse, all over about 6 miles. It could be run at any point over 4 days last weekend and the winning team, Switzerland, comprising Adrian Elsworth, Gemma Tutty, Duncan Fothergill, Lisa Spratling, Ken Evitt and captain Margaret Wikeley, completed in a total time of 6.56.17......
